DO NOT GO TO SPRUCE
We are from New York and enjoy lovely atmosphere and a nice wait staff................
most od the restaurants that we dined at were from good to great....However,
SPRUCE Was one of the worst dining experiences. The service was non existent.
It took 45 minutes for a drink order to arrive and that was because we spoke to the manager.
If you do not like salty food , do not go to SPRUCE. Every dish was overloaded with salt. They made no attempt to rectify the service and altho it was our anniversary they did not even offer a bit of sherbert.
On the other hand, QUINCE by far was a magnificent experience. The atmosphere is beautiful, very classy with a lovely lounge for an aperitive. We were seated at a very nice table and the service was magnificent. Every dish was done to perfection. I had the lamb 3 ways, the chop was done rare as i requested. My husband at the duck and that was done rare as well.
They knew it was our anniversary and our names were printed on the menu........just a lovely touch.
They came out at the end with a candle in a peice of cake and several selections of sherbert.
PER BACCO was another favorite. The staf was very accommodating.
we did not like the first table and we had a drink at the bar. we waited a short time and were seatedat a table to our liking. The waiter was very knowledgeable and the food was superb.
BIX was a very pretty restaurant and on Monday they have a piano player...........I think they have a jazz band on the weekends. The food is simple and the service was very professional.
I had the grilled salmon rare the way I like it. My husband had the halibut and he enjoyd his dish as well.
The last night we just wanted a good steak and dined at HARRIS. it is a handsome restaurant with very comfortable booths. We have dined there before and the steak is always yummy and prepared perfectly. our wait staff was very accomodating.
Once again............................skip SPRUCE

Just had a splendid meal (and excellent service) this last Friday. I hesitate to comment because if people stay away, it makes reservations easier for me, but I have benefitted from this board and felt obligated to report that my experiences at Spruce do not in any way replicate OP's. I would return in a heartbeat and would heartily recommend Spruce to others.

So was Bix the restaurant you asked about this thread from a prior trip? http://www.chow.com/topics/804615
We're still hoping you'll solve the mystery.

re: Giselle
Me too. I'm shocked that anyone from New York would find Harris' to be perfect, and I've found the service at Spruce to be one of the standouts that make it a worthy destination....but who knows, maybe we'll start reading more reports like the OP's. The last time I tried to get into the Spruce bar, it was an hour wait, and nowhere to move so we gave up.

Maybe it is just me but If you don't like a place, say that. "DON'T GO" in CAPS says that you were abused or ripped off or something. You just did not like the food and had bad service, it happens.

re: budnball
I agree 100%. I tend to ignore the "Don't go" type overly dramatic reviews. I learn a lot more from rational balanced reviews that point out low points and also mention positive points.
A place that has earned a very positive reputation over time can have a bad night or provide
a few diners poor experiences.
It is nice that the rest of Raisel's dining experiences were so good and she explains the strengths so well.
