Good Take Out in Cambridge? Central/Inman Square Tonight

I live in cambridge, between Central and Inman Squares and I am looking for some takeout tonight. With the bf off working nights, I am looking for something a little more interesting than pizza (unless it is really delicious pizza!!) He's a meat and potatoes guy, so I am a little american-fooded out. Any suggestions for take out (or even better--delivery) food in the area? Any cuisine will do. I'm just not much of an eating alone at a restaurant/bar person, unless I'm a regular at the place. And since living in Cambridge is new to me (I've been an other side of the river, Brookline/Allston/Brighton my whole life) any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

  1. Izzy's (right between Central and Inman but on Windsor not Columbia), Mulan (closer to Kendall), and the Snack Bar (closer to East Cambridge) are places which I go to for takeout. Snack Bar delivers, Mulan might at night (?), Izzy's doesn't. Izzy's can do meat and potatoes, but another option might be to see if Midwest Grill will allow takeout of their "bar churrasco and yuca plate" but that would be better eat-in. The East Side Bar and Grill can do both meat/potatoes (steak tips) and pretty decent pizza, although for some reason they skimp on the toppings in a big way. Here are a lot more ideas from past threads in those general regions, there are a few closings (Wisteria) and some which are lunch oriented or only (Courthouse Restaurant closes at 6pm).

Sorry I wasn't clear--I'm looking for NOT meat and potatoes, that's all I eat w/ the boyfriend so I am looking for something a little more flavorful/light/different. But thank you for the suggestions...they will be great for dinners WITH the bf!

The three I was suggesting to you are Portuguese, Puerto Rican, and Taiwanese. I was simply mentioning that a smaller subset could interest you and do some meat/potato too. For the takeout options, seriously take a look at the lunch and older threads as they cover a lot of the options, but as they are older miss newer eat-in options like Tupelo and East by Northeast but those are more for sit-in eating at the bar which you said you didn't want and Lord Hobo is probably a bit more foodwise what you asked about than Atwoods but not takeout (and crazy in general). None of my three are particularly light, though, for that you could consider Baraka Cafe in Central that might be what you are looking for. Never ordered takeout there, though. East by Northeast probably does offer takeout and is another possible match. A salgadinho, a salad or bobo de camarao, and juice from Muqueca also could fit the bill, but thats better one to sit down and enjoy more food (and they have a steak which might satisfy the other half). One that rarely gets mentioned is Tropico on Cambridge St (it looks like a house of pizza) which has decent carne asada tacos, grilled chicken legs, pupusas are acceptable but not the best curtido, rest of the menu is less interesting and the run-down look doesn't draw in business. There also is Olecito in Inman which looks like its open until 9pm, but never hit on all cylinders for me.

Olecito, the take out arm of Ole (both on Springfield Street, right off the heart of Inman Square), is an excellent Mexican take out joint. The tacos and tortas I've tried are all very good, and I'm particularly crazy about the shrimp taco. Get three assorted tacos ($2.75 each) and you've got a great takeout meal.

Mulan does deliver. They've been pretty quick about it in my experience.

I think take out from Baraka is a good idea. Its not the best place to eat in because its small, doesn't take reservations or serve alcohol.

Basta Pasta hasn't been mentioned yet, though its about a 8 minute walk from Central.

does mulan consistently deliver now? when they first open i always got annoyed because more often than not i'd be told "no delivery tonight", I finally got tired of it and just quit bothering.

I've ordered from them probably 3 times in the last year and never had any issues.

            Oh izzys is awesome

          3. City Girl Cafe has very good options--usually an interesting bruschetta, nice sandwiches, often Italian in concept (both simple and complicated), and excellent gourmet pizza. East Coast Grill's sandwiches are also always a good deal, under 10 dollars. Lastly, All Star Sandwich Bar has been very good lately and their chili is always a nice option if you don't want a sandwich. All are in Inman Square. My pick of the three would be City Girl; it's an easy place to pick up from, the people there are just great, and it's generally overlooked.

Mulan is right in your neighborhood. Check threads here to see if it appeals.

            2. Punjabi Dhaba is also a good option for Indian food (in Inman).

I agree. Decent Indian street food place with good prices and a little dining area upstairs.

              2. You could try Kebab Factory in Somerville for Indian food... I don't actually like their kebabs in fact (I'm more of a sauce person) but the Factory Special Curries selection is pretty good. I like the Chicken Dhaniwal Korma, and the Lamb Sali Boti is good too. They do nice desserts also- kheer, kulfi etc. yum. And rice comes with it too. And you can order from Grub Hub if you like.
BTW, "medium" is not that spicy, so go for hot if you're into spicy.

And I second All Star Sandwich.

what about thailand cafe - for their sichuan food only; the middle east does take-out though people on the board generally prefer Garlic and Lemons in Allston. There are a bunch of Indian restaurants in Central Square, but i would make the trip to Tamarind Bay in Harvard Square.
