Veg grub in DFW area?!

This may be a hopeless query, but are there any vegetarian/vegan joints around here worth stopping at along our road trip route thru DFW?

If any of you are left scratching your heads, we'll settle for a really good pizza joint or Thai/Chinese/whatever.. Please help!

  1. Instantly thought of Potager and Kalachandji's but... how exactly are you passing through? Being more specific on your route would improve the quality of responses.

In any case, ran a search for vegetarian (you should probably do the same) and these threads should get you started.

We're coming from Shreveport, LA on I-20, then taking 81 to Amarillo. Thank you for the suggestions!

In that case, I'd go with either Kalachandji's or one of the Indian places in Valley Ranch (Royal Sweets, etc); these are north of where Macarthur hits 635. Those locations shouldn't be too much of a detour.

    2. Spiral Diner is a favorite amoung vegans and has a locaion in Oak Cliff and Fort Worth. The food is suprisingly wonderful (to a carnivore like me).

Sol's Nieto has vegan options on their Tex mex menu and is talked about by the vegan crowd as a place to visit. No web site that I cna find but the address is 6434 E Mockingbird Ln Ste 101
      Dallas, TX 75214

Pizza Lounge in Dallas has your vegan cheese and other options; delivers to a whopping 4am.

Cafe Elite just opened in Plano and features raw pizza, vegan chili, Asian food (pho and lo mein are supposed to be good). Owned by a Vietnamese family. 1501 Preston Rd Plano, TX 75093 (469) 828-0607

Most nof our favorite for vegetarian and vegan is Kalachandji's located at the Krishna temple near Fair Park. It will please ANYONE.

And for your raw needs, Bliss is on Greenville Ave. and gets some attention.

      There is a start.

You can throw in the lunch buffet and the chaat menu items at Royal Sweets in Valley Ranch as vegetarian. They had some pretty amazing navarattan korma, saag, cabbage bhujjia (my favorite), dal makhani, onion pakoras, idli and sambar (sambar was good, idli not so much), naan, two types of rice. Pretty solid buffet for $5.99. The chutneys were pretty good but I would avoid the pickles as they were probably the saltiest thing I have ever put in my mouth.

        Royal Sweets
219 W Airport Fwy, Irving, TX

      2. Kalachandji's for sure. Suma Veggie Cafe and Veggie Garden (Chinese) in Richardson. There are more familiar Indian places like Mumtaz, Chettinad Palace and Mediterranean/Lebanese places like Ali Baba, Afrah, Mediterranean Cafe & Bakery where you could easily fill up on non-meat entries (They do serve meat though).

        Veggie Garden
        510 W Arapaho Rd, Richardson, TX 75080

        Suma Veggie Cafe
        800 E Arapaho Rd, Richardson, TX 75081

        Mediterranean Cafe & Bakery
        100 S Central Expy Ste 49, Richardson, TX 75080

        Ali Baba
        2103 N Central Expy, Richardson, TX 75080

Thank you, thank you! These are all wonderful suggestions. Cheers!

        2. Kalachandji's.
Just do it. You will always remember it.

          1. Coming from where? Heading to where? Where might there be a vegetarian joint between LA and Chicago if not Texas? Do tell!

Spiral Diner in Fort Worth is consistently rated as the best vegetarian restaurant in the state. I have lived in Austin 15 out of 17 years, and I never saw as many committed vegans as I did in that one year I lived in Fort Worth (aka Cowtown) Texas. I am convinced that Spiral Diner, off Magnolia St., is their secret.

If you're just passing through, bypass Dallas and stop in Fort Worth at the Spiral.

Dallas has a Spiral Diner too. I use to go there with the SO and it wasn't bad.

Coming from New Orleans, driving up to Shreveport, LA, through to DFW, then up to Amarillo, on to Denver, CO, then to Cheyenne, WY, then SLC, Boise, and finally, Portland, OR. Road trip!
I just saw the website for Spiral Diner.. sounds AWESOME, and we'll definitely check it out! Thank you, will!
