Restaurant that serves alligator in tampa bay? or at least exotic meats?

I've got me a craving! I would rather go to a place that serves tail instead of little deep fried nuggets, but if they don't over cook them, i like 'em too. I live on the southern tip of St. Petersburg, and the only place I've seen on google that serves alligator is a place in northern Tampa called skippers smokehouse, I'd like to find somewhere closer, but If not I'll drive out there. Has anyone tried gator there by the way?

Oh, and about the addition of exotic meats on the title, if all else fails a lion burger or even just some much less exotic frog legs always makes me happy.

Thanks for your help!

  1. I have had really good Kangaroo steak at Roy's. I think there is a place out towards Dunedin that serves exotic meat, Spotos Steakhouse. Google that one.

    1. Skipper's does lots of smoked meats - I know they do smoked gator, but I can't remember if it's little pieces or a big chunk.

The Hurricane on South St Pete Beach used to have alligator nuggets -- don't know if they still do, but they were really good -- light, crispy batter and tender meat.

      1. The Crab Trap I and II restaurants had it on the menu the last time I looked - the nearest to you is on 19 at the south end of the Skyway in Palmetto. Also, the Bravo market in Bradenton sells it frozen - single pieces maybe 10-12 ounces.

If you want to cook it yourself, Rick's Custom Meats has a wide selection. I highly recommend the venison jerky.

Land and Sea Market also carries raw gator meat, frog legs, and what not.

          2. Gator Burger at Cajun Cafe on the Bayou, I hear it's excellent.

            1. Thanks everyone! I think i'll head to Veggo's suggestion, the Crab Trap first since i haven't driven over the skyway in a while. Though i've really been wanting to try Cajun Cafe on the Bayou that askdrtodd brought up, but it would be hard to pass up some etouffe. I'll follow up after!

if you go to the cafe do NOT miss the Boudin Balls. Those are amazing. Grab a couple as an app for the gator burger.

                ok now I'm hungry :)

Yeep! Was there this past weekend. Beautiful weather, dining on the bayou, fried gator, po-boys and craft beer! Ooo-eee!!

I phoned the Crab Trap to confirm that alligator is still on the menu; it is. I have been crossing the Skyway in your direction for hard to find seafood, noteworthy are Rosie's for Ipswich fried clams, and Mid Peninsula Seafood for conch. Definitely worth the toll and the trip.

                3. Also, the Crab Shack on the pinellas side of the Gandy has gator: http://www.crabshack.com/ - and frog legs.

George's Meat Market used to have gator, but I have not been there in a little while . . . Call and ask.

                  1. In addition to the gator burger already mentioned at the Cajun Cafe, they have a really good alligator sauce piquant, which is tail meat in a dark and spicy roux-based sauce. An interesting alternative to just the usual fried tail meat.

                    1. I went to the Crab Trap I this weekend, they had a bunch of exotic meat on the menu, unfortunately they were out of most of it. The gator was just nuggets, but they were really good nuggets, very tender. They had frog legs too, but were $10 for 2 pair, I wasn't about to pay $10 for 8 tiny bites. I also got a deviled crab roll because I've been wanting to make some myself, it was amazing.

I tried to go to the Cajun Cafe a while back as well, but it was closed. That's what I get for not calling ahead. It is still on my list though.

                      1. Cajun Cafe on the Bayou! I know it's already been mentioned several times, but their gator burger *is* really tasty. They've got a great beer selection, and right now is a great time of year to sit outside on the water.

Anyone know what's up with the crawfish? I thought I heard that they got delayed because of the cold.

Since I moved, I took them off my facebook page, but they usually post updates on there.
