Tasca, Plainfield, VT

I was looking for the previous review of Tasca that I know was here on the board. I planned to add my 2 cents, but it looks like it has disappeared. I don't pretend to understand why, but here's my review. I hope it doesn't disappear as well.

Tasca is a newish restaurant in Plainfield, VT. It used to be called River Run and was purchased a bit over a year ago, and kept as River Run but then the name and focus changed significantly about, oh, two months ago? Something like that.

They serve Spanish tapas, as well as other sorts of small plates, and also entrees. We went there Monday night with a group of friends as a sort of farewell that ended our weekend celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary and vow renewal.

We ordered a bunch of different small plates and shared them all around the table. Everything was good to great. Particularly the toasted Spanish almonds and the Serrano ham croquettes. There were spicy olives, spicy potatoes (which are REALLY spicy and need to be eaten with other things), albondigas (sp?) in a lovely sauce, shrimp in garlic sauce (they've toned down the garlickyness of this one. probably more people like it this way but I loved how garlicky it was before), asparagus and Serrano ham, spinach and pine nuts, and I think that's it, but there might have been more. We all had dessert, as well. I went for chocolate mousse, but there was also flan, an orange sponge cake, and an almond torte to choose from. The mousses was very moussey. :)

The plates are reasonably priced (the most expensive plate was $9 I think, and that was the shrimp, there were 8 shrimps in it and it came with bread), well prepared, and delicious. There were seven of us, only two had anything alcoholic, and I believe the total bill (including drinks) was $150 (we didn't pay, we were being treated).

Service was ok. I think they only had one waitress working the floor, and the bartender of course. It was surprisingly busy for a Monday night, which was good to see. Our waitress was a little scattered and kept forgetting to refill our water carafe, so we had a few beverage issues, but the drinks came in good time. The food came out in waves, which was reasonable considering we only had so much room on the table anyway. The only complaint about portions was that the Serrano croquettes only come three to a plate (for $6). Not unreasonable for the price, but there weren't enough to really share (we should have ordered more than one plate of those). My husband said they were absolutely perfect (I was stuffing myself on shrimp). :)

All in all, the changes wrought by the new owner are good ones. They did some work in the dining room and it's a charming combination of the old rustic look it used to have, and a newer, slightly more sleek look. The chairs are still wildly mismatched in most of the restaurant, but there's more seating than before and a lovely large table for a bigger group off to one side that's very nice. They also take credit cards (which they never did under the previous owner) and that's a great thing.

I believe this place is worth taking the beautiful drive through a country setting. They offer brunch on the weekends, as well as lunch and dinner through the week. Take the time to go, I don't think you'll be sorry you did.

    The original thread (that which went missing) was actually a copy/paste of an article in Seven Days, so I think that's why it got deleted. I really hope he does well there, I think the locals of Plainfield are adverse to change.

      Well, they are to a certain extent, but a lot of the changes were made without really letting them know, like on the spur of the moment. In a small town like that, the main hang out really needs to be more sensitive to the locals. :)

      But I think they're doing well. I haven't tried them yet, but I've been told they have THE best hash browns during their weekend brunches. :)

      And I thought that someone had posted something AFTER that cut and paste from the 7 Days thingie, but I could be mistaken. :)
