Toddler-friendly places near Delta Vancouver Suites?
We are in Vancouver next week for a conference, with our 2.5 year old. He is quite used to eating out, is generally well-behaved (or we wouldn't do this...) and he eats lots of foods. We're looking for "decent" places nearish our hotel - Delta Vancouver Suites on W. Hastins (since we won't have a car) for supper on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Early suppers are best, since we'll be working on Ontario time, unfortunately! We will sacrifice atmosphere (within reason...) for good food and kid-friendliness. Short taxi rides are fine.
If possible, we'd like to go to a seafood or Japanese place on one of the nights. Good Chinese or Thai would be fine, too - these are all things we can't get at home easily.
Thanks in advance for recommendations - I searched some other threads, but didn't quite find what we were looking for.
Hope this response isn't too late for you, Foodypapa.
We've frequented Fairmont Hotel Downtown's Griffin's since our toddler son was 6 months, right up to 3-ish (we haven't eaten there in 2010). What I define as toddler-friendly criteria are:
- appropriate ambiance (ie: casual vs. formal)
- acoustics = not too loud (esp. music)
- sufficient separation proximity to other diners tables
- healthy menu choices (depending on fussiness of child)
- nearby bathrooms, and ease of access to them
- "escape" spaces where child & parent can go if child gets irritable, crying, etc. In rainy Vancouver I look for restos where there's convenient escape spaces that are covered/indoors wherever possible
- nearby accessible parking
In downtown, Griffin's for us meet all criteria above. Esp. being a hotel resto, the escape space is the entire lobby & common area just outside the resto entrance, a BIG bonus for us. We (I) even drop-off and pick-up Mom and toddler using the valet area (also covered), but I know that won't be relevant to you on your trip.
You can see their menu here:
Griffin's is *not* a foodie destination, but certainly a cut above your chain restos like White Spot, Denny's, Milestones, Earl's etc etc. (these days those restos prices are no longer "budget").
I'm sure there are many other toddler-friendly places in addition to the ones others have suggested here. Just from my own experience, Griffin's has never let us down. Call in advance and let them know you're coming, and any special requirements you may have. They are happy to oblige.
Yes, most of the higher-end hotel restaurants in town are a good choice for a toddler. I've heard good things about Yew at the Four Seaons and we've had good experiences at Herons' in the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel.
I did notice you were interested in some Asian options. The Oru restaurant at the new Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel is supposed to be very good.

We've had good experiences with our toddler at the Fish House in Stanley Park which would be a short taxi ride. They also often have special offers for early diners.
Carderos is a nice option too for small kids. It's on the waterfront and I would say it's about a 30 min walk from your hotel along the water or a short cab ride.
Surprisingly, if you're dining early Chambar also seems quite kid-friendly. Later at night it gets louder but I've seen several families dining there earlier in the evening. We haven't tried it with our toddler but it might be an option.
