Dinner at Luma.

The two of us had a very pleasant and relaxed dinner at the new O. and B. restaurant, Luma, on Saturday night.

The room itself is really quite large and if you're seated in the main section, it may feel a little cavernous. We, however, were seated towards the end of the room, past a low, dividing wall, so it felt a little more intimate. As well, the south wall, which overlooks King street, is largely glass, which gives the whole room an open and airy feeling.

The food is fairly standard bistro fare though carefully prepared. I started with something which maybe isn't standard bistro - scallop sashimi ($13). The thin slices of scallop were nicely seasoned with some olive oil, ginger and coriander. I then had the steak frites($24) where a generous portion of properly cooked steak was accompanied by passable frites. To finish the meal, the two of us shared an excellent lemon tart ($10) which was accompanied by some ice cream and a blueberry compote. Martinis were $12.00 and a fair selection of wines by the glass were $12-$16. My companion had a salad to start followed by cod, both of which she said she enjoyed though she didn't say more than that. Service was friendly and smooth. And there's NO music!

Unfortunately, even though they're in the Entertainment District, the kitchen closes at eleven, so the restaurant won't be open for people, like me and my companion, who prefer to eat after a show. However, the manager - young, female and just four months out of Scotland - introduced herself to us and I mentioned this to her. She seemed interested and thought that maybe they might try keeping open later in the future.

All in all, I would have thought it's not going to be a "destination" restaurant but is nevertheless a welcome edition to the area. Some of the screens in the Bell Lightbox building where the restaurant is housed will be in operation soon, so I can see, on a cold winter's night, a movie with dinner either before or after at Luma, would make an attractive evening out.

By the way, parking - at a price - is available underneath the building.
