New Menchies FroYo Coming to Santa Monica

I noticed the sign up for a new Menchie's Frozen Yogurt http://www.menchies.com/ which is coming to the space formerly occupied by the Mrs. Winston's location in the little mall with The Counter on the NW corner and on the same side of the mall with the Starbucks and il Forno and across from the Novel Cafe.

On Ocean Park Blvd. on the N side of the street between 29th St. on the west and 30th on the east in Santa Monica.

  1. Is there a kosher version called Menschie's?

      That one sells frozen mitzvah's

      1. re: Tripeler

Actually some of Menchies flavors are Kosher...

      2. Is Menchies better than all the other FroYo out there? I had someone rave to me about Menchies, and now I see there is one coming to SaMo. Is it really noticeably better than Yogurtland or FroPlay (these are the two closest to me, and I generally go to Yogurtland, b/c they seem to have more flavors, but taste-wise I don't think I notice much difference...)?

Someone other than me will have to weigh in on that as I had never even heard of Menchies before I saw the sign up the other day. In fact I had to google them to find out what they were since I didn't know they were a FroYo outfit.

But with a name like that, they sound like really nice guys...

I heard it's owned by Cheech and Chong. Oh, wait, that's Munchies.

Yes it is. Wider variety of sugar free and Kosher flavors, and flavors are more natural. For example, the blueberry yogurt has a real fruit like taste.

            1. re: mdpilam

They have more "american" flavors and toppings vs more asian flavors/toppings @ Yogurtland (ie taro, mochi balls)

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I'm not likely to find lychee at Menchies.

I also wonder, ever since Pinkberry went to using real yogurt instead of the powder mix, is it a coincidence all these self serve yogurt places have proliferated, filling the powder yogurt mix vacuum left by Pinkberry?

            2. Actually there already is a Menchies on Montana and Lincoln. We haven't tried it yet, but it seems comparable to a Yogurtland or Cherry On Top.

Evidently one of the big differences from most other places is that Menchies is "customer self-serve" for both the FroYo and the toppings.

                1. re: Servorg

Yogurtland and COT are self serve also. Also Twist in West LA. The Cherry On Top in Little Tokyo in the old Mitsuwa/Yaohan building has great toppings.

                  1. re: Ogawak

Yeah, I didn't figure they could be the only ones doing this (as I said "most other places") but it's obviously a good idea I would think? Since this branch is so close to our house I'll have to give Menchies a try and see what's what.

                    1. re: Servorg

The self serves have maybe 10 different flavors, some with non-fat and sugarless options. My wife loves Yogurtland on Sawtelle. For me, it's the many choices, plus the toppings. I like a place that has lychee and other fruits. I don't know about Menchies, but Yogurtland is very cheap, good for me.

                      1. re: Ogawak

Menchies has (according to their website) over 40 regular flavors, along with 7 that they advertise as "no sugar added" 25 "low carb" flavors and 4 that are touted as "dairy free"

                        1. re: Servorg

Not all at once, though. The sugar frees are two to four at any given time.
