Great Sage

Didn't find Great Sage, my favorite restaurant, in CHOWhound reviews. All-vegan, all organic, all-gourmet, knowledgeable wait staff, and well-worth the half-hour drive from Rockville MD. On Rte. 108 east of Rte. 32, near Columbia.

I'm not vegan or vegetarian, so my review may be biased.
My wife is gluten / dairy / soy intolerant, so we go to Great Sage somewhat regularly.

I find most of the food to be too bland for my taste buds.
A hummus appetizer with bread, carrots, & celery was no better than what I buy across he street at Giant, for about 4 times the price.

        Soups were nothing memorable.

Entrees I've had were mostly the daily specials, but non were special enough to even be remembered.

I do remember the bill was comparable to going to a much better restaurant, and the service is like molasses.

I'm going to have to second mdfoodlover on almost every comment, except the "not vegan or vegetarian." I'm vegetarian, and IMO the food ranges from "okay, but bland" to "not as advertised" (not in a good way either) to "send it back, and, please spare me a replacement or coupon for my next visit." And ditto the glacial wait staff. I don't like to be pestered, but, wow, you could check on the customers once or twice in a 50 minute period (we timed it the last time we went!) We'd already been served and were waiting on the check, which took another 30-40 minutes, or I would have just left.

The only good thing that sticks out to me was the introduction to Scrumpy's hard apple cider. Now that our local liquor store orders it for us by the case there's really no reason to return. And, honestly, the last time we dined there, Great Sage only won out over another restaurant due to the lure of Scrumpy's.

I've eaten here twice with vegan friends. The only plus: large selection for them. The minuses: bland spicing, overpriced, amateurish service. The organic beer I tried was one of the worst beers I've ever had. Vegan friends and I can go to a Thai restaurant and get much better food for half the price.

In a dissenting opinion, I thought Great Sage was great. Despite the comments previously posted here, my family, which includes two vegetarians, ate at Great Sage Sunday Nov. 7 because the restaurant was donating 10% of the days take to a cause one of us believes in.
The five of us were in and out within an hour; our server was efficient, professional, and helpful. The huevo rancheros and Eggs Baltimore were deemed quite tasty. The vegan Reuben sandwich was very flavorful, as was the side of cole slaw. The only slight dissatisfaction was with the berry smoothie, too sweet.
I'm not one of the vegetarians, much less a vegan, but I'd go to Great Sage any day.

I'm a confirmed carnivor but my wife is on a raw food diet so we have eaten at Great Sage several times. While it is not bad, for what it is, it certainly is not my favorite. Some of the dishes are very good, especially those that are more Asian influenced. However, I make sure to get mushrooms instead of "tofu shaped shrimp" when ordering. In fact, I've found some of the dishes to be quite good if you are careful in ordering.
