Outer Banks question
Hello. My wife and I are going to be staying in Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks in about a week or so. We've never been there before. Here's my question: Where is the best place to go for fried shrimp and hushpuppies? We have a car and would like to stay in the general vicinity, but we're also flexible about travel time. We're flexible when it comes to the price range too, but don't really want to spend a fortune.
If you are driving in from the N on Highway 158 stop in Coinjock, NC at Crabbie's for good fried seafood overlooking the
Crabbie's Restaurant @ 159 Coinjock Development Road, Coinjock, North Carolina 252 - 453 - 6225.
Or stop at Frog Island Seafood in Barco, NC. It's a market but they offer cooked food also.
Frog Island Seafood @ 3997 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC 252 - 453 - 2879.

John's Drive In has good burgers and fried seafood. Awful Arthur's has good fried shrimp and hushpuppie's. Port O Call has fried shrimp. Spanky's Grill in Kitty Hawk has fried shrimp and hush puppies. Crabby Fries has good fried shrimp and hush puppies. Here's a link to OB dining.

thanks. Anybody else have any recommendations for fried shrimp and hushpuppies (preferably the same location).
Also, my wife and I have never had a good crab cake before, so where should we go for the best crab cakes in the Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head area?

Crabby Frie's will take care of your fried shrimp, hushpuppy and crab cake needs but it's take out only open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a small hole in the wall joint but the food is outstanding. Call and order ahead. Be sure to get the crabby fries.

Mako Mike's in KDH has the best fried shrimp. The only place that doesn't overcook their shrimp til they're like rubber! Light batter. But offers no hushpuppies. Their other food is just OK.
John's will be closed by then. Awful Arthur's...greasy...and Port O' Call is just plain nasty. Not what it used to be years ago.
As far as a good crabcake...no one. Any I've ever had here are filled with a lot of filler and canned foreign crabmeat. Your best bet is to go to Carawan Seafood in Kitty Hawk (just on this side of the bridge) and buy a lb of fresh crabmeat and make them yourself. They'll be far better than anything you'll pay twice the money for.

Cross over to Roanoke Island, turn left on NC 345 towards Wanchese, and follow to the Fisherman's Wharf on the docks. You'll be glad you did!

if you're looking for the best crab cake on the OBX, it's either the Blue Point in Duck or the Oceanfront Grill in Corolla Light. Duck is about 20 minutes north of KDH and Corolla another 20 beyond that. Fried seafood..you might try Basnights Lone Cedar on the Causeway to Manteo. Owens is STILL great.

Owen's is ok, but pricey and not worth it in my opinion. Look up Colington Cafe in KDH. Good food, nice setting and ambiance, and is in KDH. Not the ridiculous prices as in Blue Point, where you'll pay $30 for 1 crabcake weighing 8oz.. For Colington Cafe, you will need to make reservations the day you want to eat there...and early. That alone should tell you something. Drive by it at night and you'll see what I mean. You should be able to see their menu online.
