Maywood

Just discovering that this small Bergen Cty town is filled with great, reasonable eating options. I haven't tried all that the town offers but love the seafood place- Seafood Gourmet, peruvian chicken- Uncle Paulies and the maywood market have been chowhound worthy on my initial visits. I'm eating my way up and down the block.
Will be trying out the bakery, pizza place and coffee shop soon.
Anybody have specific must order menu items from any of these or other restaurants/stores in the area? Is it just my imagination or is this town particularity well endowed?
Add to it that Whole Foods is a really short distance away - great wine selection in that particular store - and this is a winning locale.

Thanks. I'll check it out and report back.

    2. I've enjoyed Bobby's Burger Palace in nearby Bergen Mall for a terrific burger courtesy of Bobby Flay. Don't forget th sweet potato fries and the outstanding milk shakes. Enjoy!

      1. Forget about overpriced Whole Foods-- Head up Rte 17 another 2 miles to Fairway! Lower prices and higher quality than WF, and a much bigger selection!

For wine, go east on Rte 4 to Total Wine, again, a bigger selection with much lower prices than WF.

Fairway is the best supermarket in NJ...hands down...great cheese, exotic produce, very good quality meats, and a gourmet section with truffles, foi gras (sorry for spelling) and AWESOME olives

        2. Great coffees and cheeses in Fairway...I couldn't agree more.

          1. I moved to maywood recently and have been trying various food places nearby. If you want pizza avoid the downtown pizza shops (Mario's is ok for food). Also, the bakery is not so great. The crumb cake I recently bought was stale. The peruvian chicken place is very good though!

            1. Try the clam chowder at Seafood Gourmet -- it's excellent.

Maywood Market has very inexpensive and hearty ready-made food items; nothing too fancy, but if you're too tired to cook, you can load up on entrees and sides for relatively little money. It's a fun place to shop, too,

I've tried Victor's Maywood Inn a couple of times at lunch, and found the service frustrating.

              1. Hi foodyum, try Session Bistro, located on Maywood Ave., right next to the RR tracks and the historical part of Maywood. It's a versatile eatery, offering everything from Philly cheese steaks to sushi. It's BYOB, so if you enjoy some wine with your meal, it's easy on the wallet. Check out their Facebook page, Session Bistro. If you try it let me know how you liked it.

                  "Philly cheese steaks to sushi"

This is precisely why I don't want to try it.

                    Yes, "versatile" usually means "mediocre".

the menu changes from lunch to dinner.... the dinner menu is small and is more of a refined cuisine...lunch is lunch with cheese steaks and burgers that type of stuff

                2. Hello, I've worked walking distance from Maywood's business district for 20 + years. Therefore, I have strong opinions: I Like Maywood Market, very consitent. You can ask to taste an item that tempts. They generally have enough samples out to make make a lite lunch, lol. That is a good place to bring home prepared dinner, good selection. Warning: If an item lacks a price, inquire. When something is too expensive, they generally 'forget' to post the price. Mario's is decent for pizza and the American Italian eats that come w/ the bargain. Some people @ the job like Hillman's for its pizza and lunch items. Skip Rick's luncheontte! Skip the bakery! Seafood gourmet's fish counter is excellent. Their carry-out prepared food is excellent! Everytime I get something to bring home, fresh or prepared, I keep thinking it can't be as good as last time, but I'm never disappointed. Favourite item to order for home prep are the scallops. You almost swear they somehow add sugar. Ate @ its restaurant once and take it or leave it. It's always crowded however and BYO. People @ work seem to like Paulie's Peruvian, but I have not been. People @ work also seem to like the Oak Ale House. It's fairly new, but co-workers drop by for a huge $5 menu and liquid lunch. Some visit for happy hour. Victor's Maywood Inn is servicable, IMO. This is a very Bergen County type place: Small party space, bar w/ after-work regulars and old-fashioned continental/southern Italian cuisine. I also Like the Moon-Doggie coffee shop. They have huge, fresh-out-of-the-oven muffins. The owners are characters. Of course, it's also easy to reach WF and Fairway. As the other posters have their opinions, I think you will have to visit both and learn both stores. Fairway has killer lox!

All the love for Sessions and Maywood Inn, I have to try soon and report back.
Lately I've been eating at the bar at Mantra when I find myself on 'the highway" at evening meal time.
I am spoiled on peruvian by working in Paterson.

                  2. There is an awesome new thai place on Maywood ave called Pho Thai Lao kitchen. It's like delicious home cooked thai food. Please give it a try!!
