Bean Pies - anyone seen these in LA?

mdpilam Sep 30, 2010 11:08 PM

I haven't had a delicious bean pie since moving down from the Bay, and recently was craving one. In the Bay there was a black muslim bakery that had them and also a BBQ joint that would have them. I haven't seen them down here. Is there any place that has them? I've seen plenty of pumpkin and sweet potato pies, but no bean pies (which IMO is better than both).

I haven't tried them, but the Dutch Oven Bakery in Altadena has bean pies. The honey muffins are good, especially with a strong cup of coffee.

27th Street bakery. This place should take care of your fix!

Thanks all for the replies. I checked out 27th Street Bakery after swinging by Phillips for a quick sandwich. Though I should have called first because that location closes at noon, but they have another location at 4308 Crenshaw which is open til 8pm. Bean pies only available in 4.5" individual sizes, which I guess is fine, since I was by myself, but I don't like the crust-to-filling ratio on individual pies (I'm not a big crust fan). I was happy with the bean pie - it was good, and it definitely scratched my itch. I'll check out some of the other places (probably Shabazz next - it was referred to me by someone at Phillips BBQ).

I didn't see anyone in suits selling them on Crenshaw though... (I drove between Slauson and the 10)

Just drive down Crenshaw or La Brea on a Saturday and you'll see guys in suits selling them in pink boxes on the streetcorners.

Can you vouch for these? I've been curious. I see them at Slauson and La Brea. I also have to assume this is a Nation of Islam fundraising gig, no? (if that matters).

Oh, I'm also curious as to whether these pies are the individual size (4.5") or a whole bean pie...

It's been probably 15 years since I bought one, and I didn't like it. So I haven't bought one since. But if memory serves me correctly, I think it was a smaller pie, not a whole family pie. I still didn't finish it.... not quite my cup of tea. But I still see those guys out there. It always struck me as unusual that they dress so well, yet sell the pies on the streetcorner.

I believe the hawkers are running large-sized pies, if you trust the sign ("bean pies") and assume the large pink boxes contain pies. I'll try to check this weekend and report back dutifully. Know what you mean about the crust ratio - gotta be a whole pie.

So does the Encino FM on Sundays. I've tried them, and they're pretty good, they're just not my thing.
