Sichuan Gourmet - Framingham - Questions and What to order?

I'm going to Sichuan Gourmet in Framingham for the first time tomorrow night, and I had a few questions.

It seems like there are quite a few recommendations in this thread.

Has anything major changed there in the past 6 months?

Also, are there multiple menus, or are all the dishes on one big menu? I'm excited to try it out....will report back

  1. the sichuan dishes are on the main menu. there is also a laminated insert with specials. some of my favorite dishes are...

    wontons in chili oil
    roast beef, tripe, and tendon in chili oil
    cucumber with garlic in chili oil
    bamboo shoots with spicy wonder sauce
    dan dan noodles
    double cooked bacon
    dried chicken in chili sauce
    lamb with cumin
    sichuan style string beans

    1. My favorite there is the Old Sichuan Chicken. The chicken itself is moist and delicious, quite spicy and delicately fried, but the sauce with a pickled cabbage slaw is just amazing.

      1. I really like the Chengdu Spicy Lamb and the Spiced Smoky Chicken with Cayenne. Wonton in chili oil are also fantastic - you could keep eating and eating - if only you could get a bottomless supply of wonton.

          I'm addicted to the Chengdu Spicy Lamb, perhaps my favorite Chinese dish in the Boston area.

        2. The cold wood ears appetizer. It's not always on the menu, but they always seem to have it when I ask.

          1. ha ha, we just got back from Billerica's Sichuan Gourmet and had our favs: dan dan noodles, wontons in chili sauce. We tried a new fish dish but like our xing la fish better. We also love the scallion pancakes for a break for the heat, dried beef, old sichuan chix, cold noodles, the wings......I could go on and on.........

            1. Thanks for all the recommendations. We had a great meal. Four of us shared:

              Wontons with hot chili - Really great. I could easily eat a whole bowl of these myself.

              Dan Dan Noodles - Good, although my one complaint is the consistency of the noodles - I thought they were a bit overcooked. But the flavor was great, and spicy!

              Cold Wood Ear Mushroom - Nice, good spicing. The mushrooms were tender and flavorful, and I particularly liked going back to this dish after bites of other hotter dishes.

              Hot and Sour Wonton Soup (for 2) - Enough so that four of us each got a small bowl - broth was really nice (more like wonton soup than hot and sour), wontons were great as well. I'd eat a bowl of this when I have a cold.

              Double cooked bacon - Very nice rendition.

              Sauteed pea pod stems with garlic - Very good, big serving.

              Old Sichuan Chicken - I wasn't expecting this to be deep fried, but it was. I thought this dish was kind of strange, but addictive. The outer coating on the chicken was sweet, and certain bites reminded me of toasted marshmallow, or more specifically, the marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal. I think I might have liked it more if it was a bit less sweet, but it was still good.

              Overall, service was great - really helpful waitresses who were happy to explain different dishes. Location was easy enough to find....definitely crowded on a Friday evening, so it was good we had made a reservation.
