birthday dinner in st. paul?

Help! Trying to pick a place to go for a nice birthday dinner (2 adults, no kids). We are thinking about spending the night at the St. Paul Hotel, so walking to Meritage is an option. Price isn't an issue, but we'd like to stay in St Paul and get a bit dressed up. Thanks much.

  1. I'd think that walking to Meritage is just about the perfect option. The food is great, service is top notch, and being able to walk means that you can enjoy a good bottle of wine (plus a glass of dessert wine?) without worrying about driving.

Other places to consider: Heartland, The Strip Club.

In any case: call for a reservation, and mention it's a birthday dinner (who knows, you may get some sort of special treatment).

    1. +1 for Meritage.

Exceptional food (top 3 in MSP, according to most) within walking distance. No brainer, for me.

          Meritage.

      2. Reporting back...

We stayed at the St. Paul Hotel - it was full with at least one wedding on premises. Service was wonderful, however, and room was great. Not the most modern decor, but the bed was comfy and the view of the Mississippi was lovely.

Walked to Candyland for pre-dinner treat of fresh popcorn. Excellent as always.

Dinner was at Meritage. They had a full house, with several large parties. Service was ok (the wait staff didn't tell us about the special - I overheard it being described to another party) and we were told several times our food would be right up. That said, the food was delicious, everyone wished me a happy birthday (including Chef Klein) and dessert was comped. Because we were walking, we ordered a bottle of wine - what a great list. So happy to see many reasonably priced bottles.

All in all, just an excellent place to spend a birthday!

What did you have for dinner? Entrees you would recommend?

          (And belated happy birthday.)

I had the lobster special (flown in from Kennebunk 2x per week per Chef) and the SO had the lamb. The lobster was excellent (butter poached claws and grilled tail meat), with a celery root gratin. I am not a lamb fan, but it was excellent. The chickpea paniesse was fantastic. We also had an order of frites and a cheese plate.

        2. Any Morrisey restaurant - St Paul Grill, Pazzaluna or Tria, will give you a bottle of wine equal in value to your age during the week of your birthday. Plus a free dessert. Everyone has to order an entree. What a great deal!

Unfortunately the St Paul Grill does not participate in the free birthday wine offer. The participating restuarants are Pazzaluna, Tria, Enjoy, and Paradise Landing. Dine with them during the week of your birthday and order at least two entrees to receive your free bottle of wine!
