Onion Rolls? SF/El Cerrito/Berkeley/Oakland/Albany?

  • 9

I'm looking for onion rolls - what i remember as big round rolls that had toasted onions on them, and I don't have time to make them (nor do i bake), but I'd like to get them for a picnic for this weekend. Soft round loaves, for individual sandwiches, sort of like the shape of Kaiser rolls? but soft. I remember them from childhood, but they weren't fancy, or from a bakery, just from our local market (some chain). I have a craving for them. Anyone seen any lately? Thanks

  1. Everyday, nothing fancy onion rolls - sounds like the onion rolls and kaiser rolls that I get from my local Safeway's bakery - baked fresh daily - usually in the bins where the bagels and jalapeno rolls are found in the bakery section.

    2. If your local Safeway doesn't work I think they have them at The Junket at El Cerrito Plaza but call first.

The Cheeseboard in Beezerk does an outstanding onion kaiser, but call to check for availability. Also Saul's right down the street will sell you them plain. Don't know what brand they use, but it's goood.

Just checked and the Lucky's in the El Cerrito Plaza with the Junket has 8 packs nice looking onion rolls at $3.49.

you are awesome. heading over there right now. and thanks Mamachef, good to know about Saul's too (i do love Saul's, tho others don't think they rate as a deli. not having grown up on true NY deli food, tho, what do i know? i just like it.)

aye yay yay. Well, I DID grow up knowing a little something about Real NY Deli, and I still like Saul's, for the food, the vibe, the food, the staff, and the food. What's the point of being a CH if rarified judgement clouds the taste of good food? Enjoy them, wherever you get them, MC.
