nice restaurant, overlooking water, North Shore-ish?

I have friends in this weekend from out of town, and I'd love to take them to a nice restaurant overlooking the water in one of our charming little seaside towns (probably North Shore? South Shore would be OK, too). I'd love any thoughts about places where we might go.

Capt Carlos in Gloucester is right on the water and food is pretty good. Finz would be my first choice after a meal at Sixty 2. The Landing in Marblehead has a great view but mediocre food. The Barnacle in Marblehead is as appealing as the Landing. Red Rock in Swampscott has fantastic water views with the Boston skyline. Many people on here seem to despise the food though, to each their own.

On the N. Shore in Rockport there's the Emerson Inn or right on the water at Bearskin Neck in Rockport you have My Place.

Market restaurant in Annisquam is right on the water. It's gotten some mixed reviews here, but I enjoyed my meal.

Went there in August, a waste of time and money.

So you've said. I disagree. Not perfect, but I found a lot to like. Particularly in that area, it's tough to find locally sourced food, prepared without a heavy hand on sauces etc.
I hope they're back next year.

There is one in Salem whose name escapes me right now... I am thinking Captains Table but not sure that's it. It has an outside deck on a nice day it's wonderful to sit at. Food not too bad, I usually get the salad with salmon on it.

You probably mean Capts. Great food and view. If you're going Friday they have a prix fixe that looks pretty good.

Sorry to disagree about Capts, but I found their food to be pretty meh, with the exception of their sticky pudding which was wonderful. I would be more inclined to go to Finz, have a few glasses of wine, some oysters and buffalo calamari.

Does Sixty2 on the Wharf in Salem overlook the water? Seems to have gotten a lot of good reviews for its food. I'd even overlook a positive review from the Phantom

I would probably go to Sixty2 on Wharf for the meal, and then wander over to Finz for drinks, and even Captn's for the stickey toffee pudding.

Well, if South Shore is okay, head to over to Port 305 at Marina Bay in Quincy. Owned by the same people who own Siros (also at Marina Bay); Port 305 is an upscale casual spot, right on the boardwalk, great for people watching, with lovely ocean and Boston skyline views. Menu has a good variety, with lobster sliders, mussels, steamers, incredible fried clams, steak tips, burgers and lobster mac & cheese as well as a number of other entrees. If you have room for dessert, go with the Boston cream pie!
