East End Wines

http://www.austin360.com/food-drink/beer-wine-spirits/east-end-wines-finds-its-sweet-spot-942199.html

The Stateless has a good article about the new wine shop on the East side.

I've chatted with Mr. Hovland at food parties around town and this guy has an encyclopedic knowledge of wine.

He has to be one of the few merchants in town willing to sell you a ten dollar bottle that tastes like it cost $30

Who's been to East End Wines?

This place is great. It looks fancy (handsomely restored Victorian) but the owners are so friendly and are great at matching wines for a meal/party and keeping within your desired budget.

They have definitely sold me ten dollar bottles that taste great. Do I remember what they were? No. (Something red and unexpected paired great with oven-roasted ribs and polenta at my last party.) That's why they offer to keep your selections in a database. Go visit these guys!

love this place...no pressure...beautiful space...excellent low to mid-price bottles...good music playing...haven't made it to their friday night tastings cause its a worknight, but i'm sure they are very informative...they did big california reds last week...haven't gotten the newsletter yet for 12/17/10...better selection than the quikie-pickie across the street...although qp is open till midnight....borsao has been my favorite under 10$ for probably 5 years or more

Never heard of it until this AM when I read the ASS. Peculiar, I thought, that on their top 10, or whatever list, they listed two Vino Verde's. I don't think I have tried either of them but will have to go have a look.

I've had the Famega Vinho Verde. We bought some at World Market for $4.99 a long time ago. It's nice, citrusy and light. We had it for a dinner party with dessert. I wish I could remember what I paired it with. Everyone enjoyed it, although we'd had a lot to drink before we got to that one. I just remember it being under $5 and after we tried it, we went back and bought a few more bottles.
