What's the best restaurant to have dinner before attending a play at Trinity Rep - Local 121 , Tini, or other?
Thanks.

Directly across is Gracies. One of the best in the city.

I believe Gracie's offers a theater menu. call to inquire. best in the city imo.

Gracie's is the "best", if money is no object. For less $$, Bravo is a pretty good choice. Local 121 is very pretty, but the food is very hit or miss (more misses than hits, alas). Tini is a cool idea, but can be uncomfortable, it's more like experimental eating.

We prefer Tini's for a quicker meal, but it is quirky. We are among the few dissenters for Gracie's, particularly pre-theater, where we feel the food doesn't merit the prices--and we don't mind paying if the food is worth it. Bravo was mediocre the last time we were there. And l have to agree with wine dude's assessment of Local 121, although we are going back this weekend if the hopes of more consistency. Since we are subscribers to Trinity Rep, we do wish there were more choices. Aspire is also nearby, perhaps others can give a review of it.

Thanks so much for all the advice. Gracie's was my first choice but it's closed this weekend for a wedding(lucky couple!). Tini sounds interesting but I was concerned it wouldn't be a comfortable dinner choice. Bravo didnt' seem that interesting to me. I'm sorry to hear about the inconsistency of Local 121 because it looks lovely and the menu sounds great. Thanks again, folks. This is my first time on this site and It's great that people are so helpful. I hope to return the favor.

121 has a great bar with wonderful cocktails. Maybe you go slightly extra early, get a drink and order something small. If it seems good, keep going. If it stinks, pay the tab and try the next spot.

Sounds like a plan! We just may try that. Thanks so much.

I agree - it is criminal what they did to Bravo. It was not amazing before, but it was often very good and such a great space. Last couple times I went you could just taste the mediocrity. Sad.

And strangely enough I too will be giving 121 another shot. Guess it has been long enough that I forgot about the last couple times that weren't good.

Thanks to all for your great advice. Since Gracie's was closed and the reviews of Bravo and Local 121 were so mediocre, we decided to go to Tini and just have some fun food rather than try for a full dinner which might not be so great. Tini was as described - quirky, experimental and good. I started with a really wonderful cosmo and the wine list was fine. Food was all well prepared and different - Greek salad (sort of a deconstructed presentation), Autumn gnochetti (the best plate of the evening - buttenut squash, prosciutto and parmesan), Blackbird steak sandwich (tasty), fries with garlic aioli and hot sauce (very good), pork confit taco (my least favorite dish of the night), and of course the Tini Weinie (fun). One disappointing note - we sat down at 5:45 and only one other couple was there and they were finishing up. We were told there were 2 specials which were larger plates - one was striped bass and we both said that sounded good which the server heard us say. We planned our ordering around the striped bass as our main dish. We started by ordering a few of the other dishes. In the meantime another couple and a single guy came in(he did not have the bass). We order the striped bass (it was a little after 6 by then) and were told they were out. That was puzzling and disappointing. If they had so few orders of it, either don't announce it as one of your two specials of the evening or tell me you only have one or two orders and if I want it I might want to get my order in. We probably would have ordered differently if we hadn't planned on that so the meal ended on a disappointing note. Despite that though we enjoyed our experience. However, my husband and I both said that we wouldn't rush back unless the menu changed on a regular basis. I think it would get old fast. Interesting that it wasn't full when we left after 7 on a night when Trinity was sold out so I wonder if it's a novelty that wears off after a visit or two. Overall a good place for drinks and appetizers on occasion rather than dinner. So thanks again for all your comments. You're all really helpful.

I think most people, myself included, always assume it's going to me full.

                Thanks for reporting back!

Right - I think Tini is so small people avoid it because it must be full. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. Meanwhile, I went to Local 121 for dinner Saturday before seeing Camelot at Trinity Rep. Had been avoiding 121 due to past experience and posts. It was excellent! Very good service, from the hostess to to the wait staff. Appetizer of local tomatoes and cheese was wonderful. Entree was excellent. I will definitely be heading back. Glad I gave them another shot...
