Easy cake decorating for boys bday?

I'm making some cakes for my two sons' birthday party, and am looking for very simple cake decorating ideas. I'd love suggestions also for the type of icing to use, and recipe would help!

This is a simple, relaxed event, so nothing fancy. But any ideas would be great! I'm making a Texas Sheet Cake and a carrot cake in a 9x13.

Thanks for any ideas to spruce it up a little bit!

  1. may not be what you had in mind, but all my kids have told me that their favorite cakes were the ones I let them decorate. As young as 2 yrs old, I have handed over the decorator's icing, gel food coloring, sprinkles, & whatever else. Our family/friends have always enjoyed the creations as well, & we have lots of fun pictures of the crazy cakes.
But I totally understand if you want a prettier cake!

    1. I made a Texas Sheet cake for my nephew. Frosted with chocolate frosting (the standard texas sheet cake frosting). I piped white and yellow frosting down the side and middle to make it look like lines on a road. Then put on a new toy dump truck, piled in crushed oreos that look like dirt, with a pile of dirt behind it. He loved it and it took no time to make. If you can, try baking it in a cookie sheet instead of a 9x13 pan. It looks more like a road that way.

I like both these ideas. Chowser, what knd of icing did you use for the road lines? Not sure best type to use on the cake.

        Many thanks!

Just a plain American buttercream with butter, confectioners sugar, milk, vanilla. You could just use white chocolate, too. Melt it in a ziplock bag, cut the corner and use that as the bag. I have pastry bags but wouldn't buy one just for this if you don't have them.
