Fine dining in LA/Orange County Area

Looking for some high end restaurants suitable for birthdays/anniversaries. I don't have a specific cuisine in mind, but I do like restaurants with more "interesting" dishes, maybe molecular gastronomy? I would actually prefer OC because it's closer, but I'm willing to travel to LA.

How are the michelin restaurant recommendations? http://www.opentable.com/promo.aspx?m...

In OC, you might try Michael Mina's Stonehill Tavern, their tasting menu is nice; I also like Chef's Counter @ Napa Rose (@ Disneyland's Grand Californian).

In LA, I like Providence & Water Grill...and really didn't care for Patina.

I will put in my ubiquitous plug for Tabu. Small, fresh, interesting, but not cutting edge. You can also try some of the high end Japanese places and let the chef give you some cooked dishes and unusual fish preparations. I love going to San Shi Goi in Balboa. The last time I was there the chef did a few very unexpected things. My GF is on an anti-carb diet, so he did "sushi" over Japanese eggplant and there were some amazing sashimi preparations.

If you are interested in MG then the one answer in LA is The Bazaar in Beverly Hills. If you go the place link http://www.chow.com/restaurants/40859... you'll find quite a few reviews by LA hounds and others about their experiences there.

Marche Moderne at South Coast Plaza is an excellent special occasion restaurant, and may be underrated even with all of the praise that it gets on this board. Ask for a cabana on the patio.

Agree, if you like "interesting"/molecular gastronomy then Bazaar is the place to go.

We have tried Marche Moderne, Napa Rose, & Stonehill Tavern (mentioned by others here) and think they are excellent, but our best experience was at Studio in the Montage in Laguna Beach. Best in OC.
