Drinks + Vegetarian on a Friday night?

  • 6

In town catching up with friends. Had thought of Violet Hour for drinks, then wandering over to Takashi for dinner. Would prefer quiet environment. Restaurant has to be very vegetarian friendly.

Any suggestions? Has anyone been to Arun's lately?

Would we be better off staying in River North (we're staying at the Park Hyatt).

Would really appreciate some suggestions from Chicago CHounds!

  1. Just to clarify - we're staying at the Park Hyatt, our friends live out near Logan Square. Our budget is < $100/person.

    - Is Takashi good enough for a special occasion dinner?
    - I realize how far Arun's is from Violet Hour, but it was suggested as another place to consider with good vegetarian options for a special occasion dinner. If we went there, we'd choose another place to meet for drinks prior.
    - We're also up to other drinks/dinner combinations that aren't too far apart.

    Help/suggestions/corrections are much appreciated.

I've been to Violet Hour before and thought it was a nice place to start - and not that far for our friends to go. We'll be traveling by CTA/cab, our friends may drive to meet us.

    Your help is much appreciated.

    1. I wouldn't go to Arun's. Chicago has some really great Thai restaurants for a fraction of the cost. For a special occassion, I wouldn't waste my dining dollars on it.

Have you looked at Green Zebra or Spring?

Thanks for those suggestions - both look great. Have you eaten at either?

I have not eaten at either but they do come recommended on the board for higher end vegetarian meals. (When I eat vegetarian, it is mainly Indian, Eithopian, or Thai and not really special occasion places)

I've eaten at both Green Zebra and Spring and they both are consistent, creative and excellent. And what's so great about Green Zebra is that it is not some hippie place with food that tastes like hay. It is designed as a vegetarian restaurant, but a vegetarian restaurant with all the class, atmosphere and creativity of some of the best places in town. You'll find the meal to be delicious, satisfying and delightful in every way.

Arun's on the other hand - I couldn't figure out what the big deal was. A lot of money for decent Thai food, but definitely not better than some other very authentic Thai places in town for much, much less. I can't imagine ever going back.

Although it's been years since I last went to Arun's my wife a few weeks ago with some friends and was as impressed as ever. She can't wait to go back.

And my impressions of Green Zebra are exactly the opposite. Expensive (for what you get) and not especially memorable.
