Lake Village, AR to Shreveport ; Lake Village to Texarkana on US-82

Dear esteemed Chowhounds:

We're going on a drive between Dallas, TX and Lake Village, Arkansas. The plan is to go in on I-30 / US-82 and back along I-20 or vice versa. (The other half of this question is on the Texas board here:

Searching found many great recommendations (especially from Littleman - thanks!) but I'd like to ask two questions:

First, which of these on our list are especially great (worthy of making a special stop for)? We'll probably only stop for one real meal each way and want to make it count.

Second, which are most typical of local specialties, especially things we can't get in Dallas or in the North? ** The asterisks seem like strong contenders at the moment.

  1. Benjamin.......You can certainly get all the BBQ you want in Dallas but up North it's not as plentiful. I would choose lunch between Bryce's or Ramage Farms Country Store in Hooks, TX which is just W of Texarkana, TX on I 30 about 14 miles. Take Exit 208 to Main Street and go back to the N side of I 30. There will be a gas station on your right at the Interstate and Ramage Farm's Store will be on your left. They are in the pecan business I think so there's plenty of pecans, as well as rubs, sauces and sweets for sale. They specialize in BBQ but also serve burgers and steaks. Great country store to visit. Bryce's is outstanding but they serve country food cafeteria style. You will have a hard choice to make. Both are great but I would go to Ramage's.

On your way E to Lake Village, AR stop in Monroe, LA if you want a good po boy and great homemade pie for desert. Get off I 20 @ Exit 115 and go NE on Stella/Mill Streets about half a mile to Cypress and take a left. Take your first right on Bridge Street and continue on to Louisville Avenue. Go 1.3 miles and take a left on N 18th Street. Go 1 mile to Forsythe and take a right. Continue on Louisiana 840 - 6 for .6 mile to Not Just Pie. After lunch you can continue NE on Louisiana 840 - 6 about 3 miles to Highway 165 and go N to Bastrop, LA.

If you prefer great fresh seafood in Monroe, LA get off I 20 at Exit 117C and go N on Highway 3280 about 12 blocks to Louisville Avenue and turn right. Go to Mowhawk for outstanding cajun seafood cuisine.

    Ramage Farms Country Store @ 901 Main St., Hooks, TX 903 - 547 - 6187.

    Not Just Pie @ 2117 Forsythe Ave., Monroe, LA 318 - 322 - 9928.

    Mohawk Seafood Tavern @ 704 Louisville Ave., Monroe, Louisiana 318 - 322 - 9275.

The only other stop you should be sure not to miss is Doe's Eat Place in Greenville, MS. I live 30 miles from Greenville, MS and consider Doe's the best food I have ever had in all my travels. Order the tamales and fried shrimp for an appetizer. Get a large T Bone for two and split it. The salad is unbelievable. Dip the garlic bread in the steak juices for extra good doings. Greenville, MS has some outstanding tamale joints if you want some fine doing's at lunch. Posecai's is nice but it can't hold a candle to Doe's. Don't get upset when you arrive at Doe's on Nelson Street in Greenville, MS. The neighborhood will deteriorate rapidly as you approach Doe's. But it's been there for many a year and no one has reported any problems I know of. There will be a security guard to help you park and get to Doe's. Have fun.

    Doe's Eat Place @ 502 Nelson St., Greenville, MS 662 - 334 - 3315.

    Hot Tamale Heaven @ 614 S. Theobald St. Greenville, MS 662 - 378 - 3588.
    Jack's Hot Tamales @ 1112 Alexander St. Greenville, MS 662 - 335 - 6512.
    Maria's Famous Hot Tamales @ 605 Toni St. Greenville, MS 662 - 332 - 7847.
    Rick's Express Citgo/Corner Market @ 3085 Hwy. 1 S. Greenville, MS 662 - 378 - 3811.
    Scott's @ 304 Martin Luther King Blvd., Greenville, MS 662 - 332 - 4013.

    Posecai's @ 1443 Trailwood Dr., Greenville, MS 662 - 378 - 3688.

In Lake Village, AR you should consider Lake Shore Cafe as well as Rhoda's and The Cow Pen. You can dine at Lake Shore overlooking Lake Chicot. Rhoda's has outstanding tamales for lunch and serves breakfast too. It's nothing fancy but the food is great.

At Lake Shore Cafe will find excellent BBQ, superb seafood and steaks and good ole Southern cooking. Music begins at 6:30 on Monday, Friday and Saturday evenings. For golfers, Lakeside Place in nearby Lake Village features the state-of-the-art Lakeside Athletic Club and golf course.

During your visit you should dine at The Cow Pen which is a Delta Dining tradition since 1967. It is owned by the Faulk Family who also own Lake Shore Cafe. Located at the foot of the magnificent new Mississippi River Bridge, The Cow Pen serves the Delta’s best steaks, seafood and Mexican and Italian dishes plus an all you can eat soup and salad bar.

J J's Lake Side Cafe is 3 miles N of Lake Shore Cafe and serves an outstanding breakfast and lunch. The pancakes and omelet's are excellent. It's on Highway 82 by the Visitor's Center in Lake Vilage, AR.
