green tea

  • 6

I am trying to find a truly excellent organic green tea (preferably loose leaves). Some friends brought me back green tea from China that is really amazing, but I would like to find some that is just as good AND organic. I've tried all the boxed ones at Whole Foods, etc, but have not found anything great. Mostly they are too bitter. I want something very rich and strong, but not bitter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Have you tried any of the tea shops in the East Village? They often have huge selections and some can brew you a cup to try before you buy. Also, Porto Rico has a few green teas that are good.

Thanks. Which tea shops are good in the east village? I've tried the teas at Porto Rico and like their silver needles, but haven't been crazy over any of the regular greens.

    2. Have you tried Ten Ren? http://www.tenrenusa.com/index.php

      1. This is late for ossauiraty, but perhaps others can benefit from this recommendation for The Tea Gallery and The Mandarin's Tea Room in SoHo. Michael and Tim, the respective owners/teamasters, source their green teas from small tea growers in China and Taiwan (they also have a few Japanese teas, too). All loose leaf, all very high grade tea. You need to contact Michael and Tim ahead of time to set up a visit -- they don't do walk-ins.

Thumbs up to Tea Gallery: their tea selection and quality are very good, they are not cheap but well worth it. You can actually buy from them online and arrange for a pick-up: http://www.theteagallery.com
Two other excellent NY sources (both in Flushing) with the Web presence:
Fang Gourmet Tea: http://www.fangtea.com/ - that would be my top recommendation but not for green or white teas!
          Lu Yu Tea Empire: http://www.luhyutea.com/
I would also recommend waiting 2-3 weeks for this year green tea harvest to arrive.
TenRen must be a joke, right? I bought from them twice. They are not cheap, but quality of their tea is mediocre (apparently, they do not store tea leaves properly) and their staff is incompetent to the point of embarrassment.

        2. Green tea is Japanese tea. Try Itoen Japanese famous tea company in us online. They have organic green tea. Good Sencha green tea is aromatic and it has nice sweet finish.

There is Itoen store inside Mitsuwa Japanese super market in NJ and you can take free shuttle bus from port authority in midtown.
