Hamersley's, Aquitaine, Pop or Noche?

Kat Sep 24, 2010 05:15 AM

Trying to decide where to go for an upcoming birthday dinner. We're meeting friends for drinks afterward at 28 Degrees, so we want to be able to scoot over there quickly after dinner and not deal with driving or cabs. Been to Aquitaine before, but have never been to the other three. I know there are other restaurants in the area, but I don't care for Sibling Rivalry or The Beehive and we'll probably stop in for a pre-dinner glass of wine at Butcher Shop. B&G is out since I can't eat shellfish. I haven't been to Masa in years, but that is a possibility too. Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

Hammersley's is a classic and you can't go wrong. That would be my choice.

I chose Hamersley's for my birthday dinner last month. It was the perfect place for a special occasion.

Hamerley's for sure. I have celebrated many special occasions there and have never been disappointed.

OK, I hate to say this - Most every time I've been to Hammersley's has been wonderful. But the last two times the food and service were sub par for what I had grown accustomed to! I can't believe I hit two bad meal experiences here, but I did. I will certainly give them another chance as I have been dining with them for over 20 years!!

Well, I have gone with the majority rule and booked Hamersley's. ( I hope ajp's recent experiences are anomalies). Thank you everyone and I'm really looking forward to it!!!

I'm still chuckling at the time that I went recently in a party of eight, and seven of us got the chicken. I was the oddball, and while what I ordered (cassoulet) was really good, I kind of half-wished I'd gotten the chicken, too. One thing they are in my experience is consistent, and this is partly attributable to the fact that Gordon himself is there cooking pretty much every single night.

Is the chicken one of the better dishes to order there? I love roast chicken, but I usually go with something else since I can do a roast chicken at home. But if it is really good, then......hmmm

The roast chicken at Hamersley's is the best chicken dish I've ever had. You can certainly make roast chicken at home, but probably not this well.

The roast chicken is Hamersley's signature dish, so popular that he can't take it off the menu. There's a cook assigned to do just the chicken every night, and they rotate folks through that job every few weeks so they don't go insane. It is really good.

Hamersley's is a birthday tradition in this house.

what is noche even doing on this list? hammersley's, no question. a few summers ago i had a lobster/sweetbreads/linguica/corn dish that i still dream about.

the roast chicken and "mushroom toast" are awesome.

Update: We had the roast chicken and the rabbit with smoked bacon and shared. The rabbit was really good, but the roast chicken was the best either of us has ever had. Really delicious. Saw Gordon in the kitchen and then out and about for a bit in the dining room. A big thank you to everyone for suggesting this restaurant and the chicken. It was a great birthday meal.
