I am wondering if anyone out there knows anything about persimmons...I am in Kentucky, and due to the hot, dry summer we have had, the persimmons are already falling. I was raised to always wait until after the first frost to collect...does anyone know why? I am just wondering if they are too tart to use now (before the frost, but steadily falling), and if so; Im pretty sure they will all be gone by the first frost...
I recently read up on persimmons, and the thing about waiting for that first frost is another bit of folk wisdom that turns out not to be true. The main reason people don't pick persimmons is that it often takes a very tall ladder!
The native persimmon is another of our national treasures that is disappearing on us, because the trees tend to be either in remote locations or in the way of development. Those are one of the things I miss most about the Midwest. Out here in SoCal I have to make my puddings with the Japanese varieties - really good, but just not the same at all. Treasure yours while you can.
