How About Some Updates On Qing Hua Dumpling

saw their menu and found them to be much more expensive than I remember for the dumplings. Has anyone been lately since they moved? Reviews seem old and those that are not seem inconsistent

  1. I only ever went once about four or five months ago ... happy I did but I have no idea whatsoever what all the hype was about.

    1. It's funny how places go in and out of "fashion"...

when they were in their old location I would go fortnightly, loved it, thought it was a bargain, raved about it, took friends there. Since they have moved I have only been once. I found the dumplings smaller than what they had been previously, and the prices were higher. It was good but not amazing.

Shortly after that I tried Maison du Nord, and loved it, so that's my pick for that area now, especially if I am after a dumpling fix! (even though yes, the dumplings are quite different)

The funny thing is that one could make the same argument for Maison Du Nord. Lately they have been extremely slow with bouts of poor service. I've waited 45 min for a lunch meal, had my dish brought out at the same time that my dining partner was notified her dish was unavailable and showed up to find the place closed when they were clearly supposed to be open. But i still love them after all that.

Qing Hua is still good but the prices have gone up from their previous location.

      2. Was there last week with my 4 year old. Their dumplings are still very good, though they are a bit more expensive than when they opened.

        1. The novelty has worn off a bit for me but I still love Qing Hua. I went very recently and the dumplings were as good as ever.

          1. I haven't been in about 8 months now, but the one thing that did stand out for me was the fact that the dumplings were made fresh at Qing Hua. One of the people I was eating with said that their main complaint was that there was pretty much "only" dumplings. Admittedly, there were 4 or 5 salads, but we were with kids and some of the adults used that as an excuse not to want to order anything with words like ear, tongue and tripe in it- which eliminated most of the salads.

I like Maison du Nord, despite it's many shortcomings, but the one thing that does annoy me there is that the dumplings are frozen. It's a place that I usually go to for other food (the hand pulled noodles!!!) and possibly some dumplings as well, rather than a dumpling destination unto itself.

            1. I only went to the original, and I still didn't get what the big deal was. It was good, but I dropped almost $15 just for lunch -an app & full order of dumplings- and was hungry a hour later.

Go to Noodle Factory in Chinatown (St-Urbain just below de la Gauchetiere). I don't know why it doesn't get more attention on this board, but the dumplings are just as good, they're cheaper than at the original QH location, and they do alot more than dumplings (well), too.

              1. I've been going about every 2 weeks for the last few months - can't seem to kick the craving!

                My faves:

                Lamb Coriander
                Chicken Curry
                Shrimp Egg Cabbage
                ...always half steamed/half fried

                For appetizers:
Spicy Tofu Appetizer(Don't know if it's homemade, but the most delightfully silky tofu I've ever had)
                Coleslaw appetizer
                Spicy cucumber app.

Although I've never visited the old location, every new visitor I bring enjoys this place thoroughly...probably be back this week!

I went to QH once since they moved (about 3 months ago) and it was ok. The service was fine....and the dumplings tasted decent (however I did notice the price was higher...around $8 to $13 per order of dumplings). I also ordered the duck feet and spicy pork tongue and cucumber which was pretty good however I don't plan to return.

When I am in that area....I prefer Maison du Nord (even though their service is a hit or miss). I would start off with the Pork sandwich, and then ease into the Beef Noodle Soup (always take handmade noodles option) and then end it off with an order of steamed dumplings. By the time I am finished, you will need to roll me out the door!

Shattered is right....the Noodle Factory is a great place. They make the real soup dumpings....called Xiao long bao. Mmm...served with a vinegar dip and slivers of ginger....I definitely prefer this specific dumpling over those perogie dumplings from QH and Maison.

                  1. re: ddmark

it's hard to complain about service whilst the restaurant has childrens toys and a nintendo wii in plain sight

                    1. re: celfie

Which restaurant has the wii? Qing Hua Dumplings or the Noodle Factory?

Btw, I have had a few pretty mediocre dishes at the Noodle Factory and they also expressed some disapproval once when we tried to make a dinner out of dumplings (as my kids have been used to doing that at other dumpling houses). They seemed bothered that we weren't just treating them as an appetizer. So that's my reason for not citing them here more often.

                2. I was wondering if the take out dumplings are refrigerated or frozen. Thanks.

Frozen, every time I've gotten them...
