  • 8

I am headed to Honolulu in November and we will be hitting up AW but wasnt sure what I am looking at spending for a 2 person meal with wine and tip etc....Also what does the 7 course tasting menu run per person and does the whole table have to order it?

Thanks

  1. Hunt is bound to chime in soon, in the meantime here is the link to their menu

    1. Can't remember the price of the tasting menu, but I had it last year. I really like Alan Wong's--I think he's probably the best (most successful at combining different ingredients and cooking styles) pac-rim chef--but I didn't really care for the tasting menu with wine pairing. First, I thought the food was a bit too rich and heavy. I also didn't really care for a lot of the wine.

Again, I really like AW's, and it would probably top the list of recommendations for fine dining on O'ahu.

We most often do the "sommelier's pairings," and the Chef's Counter, and have never been let down. Could I have dredged up a better wine from my cellar, if Chef Wong had been cooking at my house? Probably, but all have paired very well.

PS - I have invited Chef Wong and his staff to stay with us, when he plays in a chef's charity golf tournament in PHX, and not even have to cook, but he's not taken me up on it, even if I offer to open my wine cellar to him...

      2. I have done two reviews of AW's with prices, though they are now over a year old.

A search of this board should turn them up.

        Good luck, and aloha,

PS - AW's is our one, "must not miss" locations. We had to cancel in May, and the first reservation that I made for a redux was the "Chef's Counter" at AW.

PPS - looked back and saw that two tasting menus, with the sommelier's pairings, plus extra wines ran US$380 to 420.

        1. We had dinner at Alan Wong's last week at the total was $117.38 including tax and tip for dinner for two. However, this only included one glass of wine and one first course - if you added one more of each, it would probably be more like $150. We thought the dinner was fabulous and a great value - highly recommended!

          1. We just dined at Alan Wong's on Tuesday of this week and it was far and away the best meal of the trip. If I recall correctly the 7 course tasting menu was $135 without wine pairings. They also offered a 5 course as well. Both tasting menus require the whole table to participate.

i think that we spent $450 for 4 which included 2 bottles of wine (moderate) and 3 beers. We all started with salads, had entrees and split a dessert. Two of us also had coffee. They have an excellent coffee service. We were pleasantly surprised by the pricing especially for the quality of the food as well as the portion size. Our friends, who are locals, had plenty to take home for lunch the next day.

Next time we are there, I would like to sit at the counter and observe the kitchen. No matter where you sit, it is worth a visit.

I have always felt the same way. We love the counter, though it can be a bit frenetic. The intercourse with the the kitchen are not to be missed - at least by us. Also, it does seem that extra morsels always end up on our plate. Only complaint that I have ever had is that there is so much beautiful food going by, and only a portion of it can be served, that one is left wondering - what would THAT have tasted like?

Otherwise, we have always loved every visit, and they are the first restaurant, where we make reservations. All others are around AW's.

Oct 13th is another Farmer's Mkt Dinner (local farmers attend and discuss their products) at A/W's which are the best tasting dinners there.
