If you want pure raw fish (sashimi or nigiri), then any discussion about Bay Area sushi restaurants must include Sakae Sushi in Burlingame. Its sister restaurant, Yuzu, is also deserving of praise (and slightly, slightly easier on the wallet).

You'll get more responses if you express at least the part of the bay area you're interested in, and the price range (if $100/pp is fine, the list is short and sweet).
What's interesting is I can't find much in searches either. I don't think we've been talking sushi that much over the last year.
