40th birthday celebration?

Dear Chowhounders,
Approximately 8 - 10 friends are gathering from across the oceans and the country to celebrate a dear friend's 40th in February. Part of her birthday surprise is that she is being transported from Ireland to New York for the fete. As the New York friend, I am supposed to come up with some dining choices, and turn to you for help (I will give credit where due). The last dinner she and her girlfriend had and loved in New York was at The Modern. So far, I've suggested Eleven Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern and Del Posto. I think Le Bernadin may be too seafood specific for the group. I would love to know what you think of those, and any other suggestions that come to mind... What do you think? Many thanks!

Eleven Madison Park
11 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10010

Gramercy Tavern
42 E 20th St, New York, NY 10003

Del Posto
85 10th Avenue, New York, NY 10011

    1. EMP and GT are certainly fine places to fete a friend for a 40th birthday. I could think of many alternatives, depending on food predilection and ambience. I like Tocqueville a great deal, too, though EMP is the better of the two dining spots. You've got a happy problem to solve.

You are certainly right! I mentioned The Modern because I think that is just about the right tone, ambience, etc. I don't think they are looking for anything too casual. Please let me know what else comes to your mind, 280 Ninth.

Don't think you need any further suggestions. There's always places like Alto, Aureole, etc., but it feels redundant to me. These are all fine places to eat, opinions diverge on the better (or best of) said choices, as always, but that's the fun of it all, sorting it out and making your own decisions.
