Bad Smoked Whitefish
Tried out some of Whole Food's smoked whitefish (N. Scottsdale location) and it was flat out disgusting, I mean gross with a capital G! Even with the smoking process the fish smelled really bad. I couldn't try a sample as I was in a hurry and to be honest was fasting due to the Jewish holiday. I asked the fishmonger if it was good and of course, he said it was really good and they sell a lot, I doubt it! My point here is that no fish monger should serve up something so bad.
For future reference, where can I find really good smoked fish, especially whitefish?
Unfortunately, prepared meats (seafood or other), are suspect in my book. All too often, the meat is left over, and too much is done to disguise this. All too common, IMHO.
I've never tried smoked whitefish, but, I am pretty sure it is available at Chompies, Scott's Generations, and Lox, Stock and Bagel, FWIW. The smoked whitefish *salad* from Big City Bagels, has been mentioned favorably, here, in the past.

I saw whole smoked whitefish at Costco the weekend before last (the one on Hayden). Was tempted to try it but bought some lox instead.
"Really good" smoked fish, especially whitefish, is hard to find in Phoenix. This was a favorite of mine when I was growing up in Milwaukee. The best I've had I got from Best of Europe Meats and Deli on 32nd Street and Greenway in Phoenix. They don't always have it though, so call ahead. They have great deli meats, too and less expensive than the crud available at any supermarket.
