Foodies visiting Falls Church, VA

We are visiting son, daughter-in-law, grandchildsons and new grandaughter for a week in Virginia.
We will do a comparative burger tasting of Ray's Hell Burgers, BGR, Five Guys etc. for lunch. Will need a lot of great take-out places for dinners to take home to the new mom. Need suggestions. We like all types of ethnic and are open to anything.

  1. Just a word of warning... unless you are sharing, if you have a Ray's Hell Burger for lunch (which you should!) you might not be hungry for dinner!

    1. The comparative burger tasting sounds pretty lame: you will not be eating something fresh or you will be having at least three burger lunches. Either way, sounds like an anti-foodie idea to me. Maybe the only way to do this is to go to each place for 1/3 of a burger per person and eat in. I'm not sure how a medium rare RHB survives a 20 minute drive.

Anyway, Five Guys is an inexpensive fried greasy burger (not a bad thing, mind you) and the others are more upscale grilled burgers. RHB vs. BGR is a more straightforward comparison.

In Falls Church City, two places I recommend for doing pretty well for take-out:

Luzmilla's for Bolivian food. Closes about 5pm each day. Get the mani (a peanut soup). But make sure they give you the french fires on the side - they go into the soup.

The Lebanese Butcher. The chicken shawarma sandwich is killer.

Falls Church is one of the most diverse and rich food areas anywhere in the country for its size and population, such a shame to spend so much time eating burgers.

Perhps I should have mentioned that my son and d-in-law are just back in the US from a 2 year foreign service assignment in India - so burgers are a BIG deal to them. We wouldn't be doing the burger tasting but for that.

Before they went to India we used to like the food at Huong Que - Four Sisters Restauent in the Eden Center. I understand they have moved. Still good? Or are there better Viet Namese places?

I think there have always been better places around. In Eden Center:

Hai Duong for the cha ca thanh long (crispy catfish), mussles with rice in clay pot, and the wall special of de xao lan (goat curry). Get that with french bread.

Nha Trang, for the noodles with shrimp paste (in the shape of worms), the bo luc lac (shaky beef), roast quail, and the garden rolls with ground pork.

Bay Lo: fried goat roll, miscelllaneous salad, and the bay lo 7 special (hanoi bun cha).

The last two are a bit hidden from view inside the mall, so you'll have to do some searching for those.

      2. You should search the board for specifics on my following favorites in Falls Church:
        Vietnamese at Saigon Cafe,
        Szechuan at Hong Kong Palace,
banh mi Vietnamese sandwiches at Song Que deli in Eden Center.

I've also heard good things about XO Taste for Chinese, and there are other Vietnamese places in Eden Center (a big Vietnamese mall) that you can explore.

You should search the board for "Falls Church" and many options will come up.

Heartily second Hong Kong Palace and am surprised Steve didn't mention it in his recs.

This and Eden Center (not 4 Sisters).

        2. I would add La Carenquena to the list of places to try. I am sure they would do to-go.
