What's the best place to buy lox in Manhattan?

Please note that I mean LOX, not smoked salmon. I live in the Village. My current supplier is Murray's bagels, but it's not always available, their slicing sucks, their tare weight is dubious, and I'd like to broaden my supply base.

I went to Citarella. Nope. Jefferson Market: they didn't know what I was talking about. The new Trader Joe's at Sixth and Twenty-second: nope.

I know, Russ & Daughter's has it but they're always overcrowded with tourists. Suggestions appreciated.

The best value for quality is probably Zabar's. There's an older man who cuts at the counter on certain days of the week who used to be a CPA. He does a very, very nice job of cutting.

Murray's Fish also has lox and cuts it well, but it's expensive.

Sable's on the UES does too.

How would you rate Sable's in comparison to Russ & Daughters. I live on the UES so Sable's would be more convenient.

Russ & Daughters is not always overcrowded and it's not full of tourists. Try going at offpeak times.

Guts is right. Not always overcrowded and their lox is excellent. Plus it is relatively close to the village. Other than that Zabars has good Belly Lox but they are a bit far from you.

True lox is a dying art and not too many places still carry it. Russ n Daughters version is the real deal

Russ & Daughters is NOT always overcrowded with tourists.
When do you usually visit there?

Have been there a few times over the summer and the store had a few customers looking but not buying.

The sign of a good store (R&D is better than good) are the crowds.
Be patient...well worth waiting for.

My vote is for Zabar's, or, if you're on the Upper East, I would highly recommend Agata & Valentina (79th/1st) (make sure to ask for Sophia to slice; A&V also makes dynomite whitefish salad)

Stick with Russ & Daughters. I was there on Labor Day (after not having been dowtown in at least 2 years--I've moved to the UES), and the gaspe was amazing. I've been going to Tal Bagel on E. 86th St, and there is no comparison: R&D is 1000% better. It's worth waiting among the tourists to get the best quality of fish. While I've not had the lox at R&D, I would expect that based on the quality of fish that they carry, the lox has to be great.

Try Tal Bagels on 1st Ave bet 53rd & 54th. Their slicing is fabulous. I always get the Nova, but I'm 99% sure they have lox too. You can call them. Jewel is the master slicer fellow.

I think Zabars still does...and Murray's (no relation to the Village bagel place) on upper Broadway (92nd Street) probably does...I assume you don't mean "nova" which Citarella does carry.

If you go to Zabar's, be sure to wait at the appy counter for hand-sliced lox. The pre-sliced in the refrigerator counter is good but, well, not what you're looking for, I suspect.
