Under construction taco place in mount vernon?
I was walking around downtown Mt. Vernon near the municipal parking lot (a block east of Gramatan between Fiske place and Prospect near the Jamaican Jerk express) and noticed a new place "under construction" with a blackboard menu in the window.
It appears to be a branch of a New Rochelle mexican place. Cannot remember the exact name but they serve Tripe and Al Pastore tacos. Dunno, it looks promising. A true hole in the wall with a couple of tables in front. It would be awesome to have a place like that in Mt. Vernon. Then all we need is Pho and Falafel right?

Is it on North 3rd Avenue on the same block as Papa John's? It would be nice to see a good Mexican place succeed there. Last year a taco joint opened there and lasted about 2 months and prior to that it was a combo Chinese/Mexican take-out/delivery which was there for about 3 years. My understanding is that the rent is very high but hopefully the new place can overcome that tough monthly nut.

Passed by the Jamaican place. It is now open and it actually looks awesome. It has things like ox tails and pigs feet stews. (mostly takeout but there may be one or two tables) It looked pretty hoppin' at 10AM Saturday morning. Definitely not the same as the fast food places in the area. I think I will have to try it when I am hungry. There is also a Honduran restaurant on Gramatan that actually looks like it might be a good hole in the wall joint.

re: laylag
I can't remember the name. It is near Papa Johns over by the municipal parking lot. It does not appear to have a web page. (It's on 3rd Avenue). The only listing I can find lists a "Matrix Jamaican" on that block. but I think there is more than one so I am not sure. 8 North 3rd.

If you are still interested, the name of the Jamaican place is The Matrix. Menu looks intriguing and it is always crowded when I pass by. Counter seating, mostly take-out, smells good. The only reason I haven't tried it is because I'm only in that neighborhood for dentist visits and the last thing I want with a mouthful of novocaine is spicy food.
