Late Lunch - 15 min walk of Lafayette & Howard in SoHo?

  • 8

Looking for a place for a very early dinner / late lunch (around 4pm on a Saturday) near to our hotel which is located on Lafayette & Howard. Max 15-20 minute walk due to time restraints.

Some place casual, maybe a diner, deli or cafe type joint. Not too busy or loud and can take a party of 6.

Not Chinese, Indian or Thai. Prefer American, Italian, French.

Thanks :)

  1. SPQR is open for lunch and dinner serving fine Italian and it's 3 blocks E of your hotel. O'Nieal's is a fun spot two blocks N of your hotel. My wife really likes it because scenes from Sex and The City were filmed there. It may be too busy for you. Parigot is a neat French restaurant but it's a very small place.

    SPQR Italian Restaurant @ 133 Mulberry Street, New York, NY 212 - 925 - 3120.

    1. Balthazar on Spring and Crosby is just a few blocks from there. It may be pricier than you want to do, and it can get noisy (though at 4 on a Saturday it may not be too loud), but it would definitely fit the bill for a nice (but not too nice) early dinner before heading out for the evening.

Yeah, if you want to go to a Parisian-style bistro, I would second the recommendation of Balthazar. Make sure to reserve if you decide to go there.

      2. I'm going to suggest Walker's, a classic bar and grill in Tribeca that serves excellent steak at rather inexpensive prices, among other things. If you sit in the back room it's likely to be quieter. Really solid American food. See if their menu is to your liking:

Edit: Whoops! It looks like they end lunch at 4 and start dinner at 6, so it might not work for you.

Walkers sounds perfect... apart from the hours! We might be able to get there earlier depending on the tie my folks reach the hotel from EWR...

Also considered Bubby's - tried and trusted usual haunt.

Walkers continues serving during the in between hours with a limited menu. Burgers are included, and I seem to recall a couple other items like the quesadilla. It's one of the best burgers in the city.

That could work well for us then. Is it likely to be quiet around 4pm?

On a Saturday? Usually. It's a mellow spot in an old NY tavern setting. Sometimes there's a game on, but the televisions are only in the front bar area. They have a couple back rooms, and the last time I was there, I watched a business meeting at the table next to us. Prior to the business men, there was a family at the same table with some spirited young children making noise. It attracts a blue collar crowd, and on a good day, it's simply the best gastropub I've experienced in the city.

I wish I knew more places like it in NY.
