"Ethiopian" hummus

While at the market a while ago, I purchased a half kilo of what I was told (by the Ethiopian store owner) was "Ethiopian hummus." They are basically yellow split peas. I started them soaking yesterday in hopes of coming up with something brilliant to do with them today, but I'm running into a dead end. Anything special to do with them other than your standard cook-puree or cook-add-to-soup routine?

Also, when I opened the lid of the bowl to change the water, they smelled so bad I almost ditched the whole experiment. Seriously, like someone puked in the bowl. Is this normal? Help!!
