Boiled Peanuts - Greensboro?

BCgoUSC Sep 17, 2010 08:57 AM

I just moved to Greensboro from Columbia, SC and have looked ALL OVER to try and find some boiled peanuts or preferably green peanuts to boil myself. I used to be able to get them anywhere in Columbia and green peanuts were always at the grocery store.

Does anyone have any idea where I can find any? I'm willing to drive 15-20 mins to stock up. I know there's a big farmers market around but I don't want to drive out there for no reason if they don't have anything.

Thanks so much!

I just discovered the joy of boiled green peanuts a couple weeks back, so I feel your pain. Soooo much tastier than the regs!

I feel your pain! I love boiled peanuts and I have found green peanuts at the farmers market on sandy ridge road, off of I-40. I think it is a pain to make them myself, so if you find a good source let me know.

I have heard that Piggy Wiggly stores carry them. Also call if a local Indian store may have them.

I usually recommend Piggly Wiggly, but there doesn't appear to be one in Greensboro. The farmer's market is probably a good bet, though.

You'll find that in general, boiled peanuts are much less common in North Carolina than they are in South Carolina, where they are indeed pretty ubiquitous. Grocery stores in the cities here also tend to cater to generic American(trans: Yankee) tastes as opposed to Southern ones. I frequent a Pig in an outlying rural area for a lot of things I can't find reliably or at all at Harris Teeter, et al.

            If all else fails:

You should go to the Farmer's Market downtown sometime anyway. It's great.

Don't know about Greensboro, but Lowe's Foods here in Winston-Salem has raw peanuts. You can also get them at W.G. White's store in downtown Winston-Salem. Very easy to boil them yourself--just simmer them for a few hours in salted water (a crock pot works great too).

Chef Jacks has them and they are excellent! Chef Jacks is on Battleground Ave. Head north on Battleground, as soon as you pass Brassfield there will be a Wal-Mart on the right. Chef Jacks is in the same building as a gas station just past Wal-Mart. I'm sure you will be happy to find this place since you are from columbia. He has SC mustard based BBQ that is better than most that I have had in SC. Excellent fresh ground in store burgers, and great hot dogs. Don't let the outside appearence fool ya!!! Enjoy!!
