I always get mine at Sahadi's but I've got no gold standard for comparison. It is totally 'good enough for me' but that wasn't the question.

Im assuming you are talking about Titan, and they did have a big variety of really good barrel fetas the last time I was over there.. Like JohnL usually buy at Sahadi's which has some very good fetas. Im not confident recommending in Astoria currently since it has been too long since I have done a lot of shopping there but there were or are at least 1 or 2 other greek stores on I think 30th Ave. selling very good feta in the past. wherever you go you should ask for a taste of course..

Ok, guess I'll hit Titan, unless anyone has recent experience in alternative Astoria venues....or elsewhere.
I'm figuring I can drive around a few hours with unrefrigerated feta, right? Obviously, the stuff predates refrigeration, so this is probably a "duh", but I figured I'd check.

Suggestion: have them pack it in a plastic container with brine to cover. No worries re spoilage (although the stuff is so salted I don't think you'd have any issues anyway).

I get mine at Massis in Sunnyside. At any given time they have at least 8 types of feta. El Shater always has it, but its not my reason for going.

I get Bulgarian feta from both Titan and Massis, and I like Massis best.

I think you're referencing Astoria too, but I'm not sure which place exactly. Perhaps the Euro Market on 31st? It's a Balkan market with a great selection of beer to boot. I'm sure they'd have what you're looking for, but if not there's both another Balkan market and Titan nearby.

Yes, I could probably name fifteen places in Astoria selling Bulgarian feta. I need, though, really, really GREAT Bulgarian feta.

Well, I figured a place that caters to a Bulgarian/Balkan crowd would be a safe bet. Or do they only like mediocre Bulgarian feta in the home country?

Hi Jim,
The feta at Titan is excellent with lots of turnover--bulgarian is very very salty--other poster was correct in telling them to put it into plastic container with the brine (they call it the "juice")--so, don't have them just wrap it with wax paper--I was a longtime Titan customer over 20 years--until about 6 months ago when I switched to the Greek Emporium on 150th st in Whitestone--good selection of feta--and super nice people--and we hit up the Dolce Via gelato spot, and the little cupcake shop down the street--and then head to Utopia Bagels from best bagels and appetizing--and fantastic grandma slice pizza at Graziella on Francis Lewis Blvd--so, it's sort of a chow run--but if you do go to Titan (and they have a little parking lot by the way which is great)--make sure you get yourself some melamakarona cookies..theirs are the best.

Hi Jim,
Since I don't really care for it, I know diddly squat about what constitutes great feta but I agree with Monsieur Porkchop in that trying somewhere specifically Bulgarian makes sense.
So, I'd check at Parrot Coffee (two locations - Astoria and Ridgewood).

Although, you're so knowledgeable that you've probably already tried here! So, I guess I'm just trying to give my less trodden part of Queens a little plug.
Ciao,
Glendale is hungry...
