RNM Replacement - Recommendations?

Hi there,

We live down in LA, and had been getting into the groove up driving up to SF to visit a friend of ours and hit RNM - we loved it! So sad that it's gone, but now we're looking for something that can fill in that hole.

Can anyone recommend anything that would be in a similar vein? I'd say high points were the maitre d' (Robert), the food of course, ambience, and price... Might be a tall order since it's hard to compare, but any recommendations from those of you who knew RNM would be so appreciated. We're heading up there again soon and would love to have something in our hip pocket to try out!

Spruce, maybe? It's really a beautiful, classy restaurant with great service, though perhaps a bit more expensive than RNM. Also, maybe Bix.

Spruce is fantastic, btu the atmosphere is way different. I love the ambience there, but it's very open and not especially intimate. The menu is also more "Contemporary American", whereas RNM was more eclectic and drew influences from several different cuisines.

the only one i could think of would be Gitane; again though, not exactly identical; RNM definitely was a unique restaurant

          I, too, really liked RNM.

Two come to mind, though neither exactly on the mark:

          Nihon Whiskey Lounge.
This is japanese, but they have lots of interesting small plates and a loungey hip vibe, and some interesting cocktails in addition to an extensive (but overly priced) whiskey menu, and some nice sakes.

          Lolo's in the mission:
Not as hip a vibe, more mission-style, but they also have some really interesting and delicious small plates.
