A couple nights in Norcross, would love to find foodie spots

askdrtodd Sep 16, 2010 07:15 AM

Can anyone help? I'll be smack in the middle of Norcross (Peachtree Industrial and Jimmy Carter) and I'd love to find something within 15 minutes of the hotel that you guys highly recommend. I like creative food, really spicy food, etc. Price not important.

Thanks!!!

Barring traffic nightmares you are really only about 20 minutes from Buckhead where you would have many choices.

Norcross actually has some decent choices (and this coming from an ITP snob!). Palomilla's is a solid Cuban option. Or Thai Star on Peachtree Industrial and Medlock Bridge. I had a surprisingly delicious, nicely balanced lunch there. Dominick's in Norcross square has decent Italian, but nothing particularly creative, and the portions are so absurdly large that it's just silly, especially if you're staying in a hotel.

In Norcross you are pretty close to Buford Highway, which is Atlanta's ethnic restaurant heaven - bizarro, suburban highway that has a hundred little Mexican, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and various other restaurants. I go to Pho #1 regularly. Honestly, for the most part, if you get to Buford Highway and go a block in either direction, you'll find something that smells and tastes good.

        Nearby:
Stone Bowl House Woo Nam Jeong‎-
        5953 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta, GA‎ - (678) 530-0844‎
The best Korean food in Atlanta currently. skip the 12 course dinner and the bulgolgi. Go for the whole mackeral, seafood pancake, bibimbap dolsot, stews, jigae's and soups.

        Hong Kong Supermarket
        5495 Jimmy Carter Blvd # A15, Norcross, GA‎
Left side front: Hong Kong Bakery. Good Banh Mi, spring rolls, Out the door and a couple of doors around to the left the Tofu place--makes it own tofu, vg spring rolls, plates, comfort food, all packed to go.
Right side: FoodCourt. Big Wong BBQ--meat that hangs in the window; exc chicken, roast pig, red pork. Woering--(sp?) terrific grandma style Malaysian food. Get the combo plate.

        Mi Pilon‎
        5705 Buford Hwy, Norcross, GA‎ - (770) 797-2924‎
Vg Dominican/Caribbean style food served by two sisters. Everyone from Norcross cops, to office workers to Caribbean hipsters belly up for homestyle food like lechon asado, oxtail, baked chicken, black beans, moros, yellow rice, maduros or plantanos. Beer, credit cards.

        IMHO, MUST NOT MISS
        Sushi House Hayakawa‎-
        5979 buford highway, Norcross, GA‎
The flat out best sushi/small plates around. Small, intimate, extraordinary. But no 'buzz'--just the real thing. dinner only.

Tasty China‎. TastyChina.net is the web site.
        585 Franklin Rd SE, Marietta, Georgia‎ - (770) 419-9849‎
Chef Peter Chang (aka 'Zhang') is back. Incredible Sichuan, renowned even by Calvin Trillin in the New Yorker. Outside of rush hour, a 30 minute drive from your location. If you have the energy and focus for the drive setting out around 7:00 PM, grab up everybody you can and head over--but not on Monday--Mr. Zhang's day off.

My office is also at Jimmy Carter / P'tree Industrial. For lunch we like Hong Kong Supermarket and environs (above); and El Indio Beaver Ruin Road for $1 tacos lengua, asada, al pastor.

Also--Quoc Huong, 5150 Buford Hwy NE, Doraville, GA 3034 for combination Banh Mi. But the rolls are better at Hong Kong Supermarket environs. http://www.chowdownatlanta.com/atlant...

Norcross is one of Atlanta's epicenters for terrific food. Your colleagues might favor the generic blandness of Ted's Montana Grill or the mixology wonders (sic) at Holeman Finch, but for the fortunate Norcross based intrepid--eat often, eat much and spend little. You will leave sated. Too--forget Buckhead, unless you esteem small portions, similarly small sized things clad in black by the front door and upsold per person check averages. When my better half insists on something nice and the opportunity to put on the dog, Buckhead is among the places that get our business. But the places above get our patronage.

Wow I love you guys. I reallllllly appreciate it!! If any of you are ever in Tampa or Orlando let me know, I'll make sure you dine like kings! :)

I'm there Sunday night, Monday night, and Tuesday until 2pm. I was going to stop by the Brick Store on Sunday night on the way up from HJ because I'm a huge craft beer guy and I've always wanted to go there, so Monday lunch & dinner and Tuesday lunch are all open. Really the only dinner I guess I get to choose is for Monday night, which makes me sad that I have to miss Tasty China.

Although I looooove ethnic food and the most unique things asian restaurants can offer (these are probably the places I'll hit for lunch, for dinner I'm looking for small plates or multi course with a good beer/wine list. I saw that Sushi Mito does a Kaiseki, which I've sadly never gotten to experience, and I'd like to believe I'm a pretty "seasoned" foodie hehe. How is that place? Anyone had the Kaiseki?

Thanks again everyone I appreciate your input a lot!!!

Sushi Mito is my neighborhood place, 3 minutes from the house, and a solid workmanlike option at friendly pub prices. Whenever the budget permits, however, we go eight minutes to Sushi House Hayakawa where the food is over the top. Both are good choices.

Ate lunch at Sushi Mito, absolutely loved it, tried 4 or 5 little dishes from their Izakura (sp?) menu, really enjoyed the plum jellyfish, and the flash fried spicy octopus legs, which weren't breaded but were a fantastic flavor/texture contrast.
Where should I eat tonight? Something small plates within a 20ish minute drive would be wonderful...

              Thanks again!!!

If more Japanese fits the bill, Shoya Izakaya is kind of fun. It's just inside 285 at Peachtree Industrial near the Super H Mart.

If more small plates are really what you want, there's an Eclipse di Luna off Ashford Dunwoody. Or Com in Dunwoody proper for Vietnamese.

Nice, tasty read, thanks! I teach cooking classes and write a food/cultural blog but actually eat more at home so your info was helpful for trying couple new spots on BuHi. I agree with you, Korean BBQ meat is a bit overrated (and pricey). My favorites are the banchan "tapas" dishes, whole fish, bibimbap, chapchae noodles, and more. Best, Natalie

I ate at Sushi Mito (loved it!) and Thai Star (loved it!)

Also drove out to Buckhead and ate at Restaurant Eugene and was underwhelmed, especially for the $$

Another spot to try is Gu's Bistro on Buford Highway. Personally, I would take it over Tasty China if I had to choose between the two. There are several threads on Gu's here, just research and make your choices accordingly.
