New Taiwanese Breakfast Restaurant Opens Up In Monterey Park

  • 9

So when one of the Hounds reported last month that Dumpling Master in Monterey Park was being replaced by something called Huge Tree Pastry, I was expecting to check out a brand new Chinese bakery. However seeing the grand opening signs today I stopped by to find that Huge Tree Pastry opens up bright and early at 7 am to serve Taiwanese breakfast items, as well as noodle soup and other Taiwanese favorites. Most expensive item on the menu is the fried fish cake roll, the one Taiwanese food item that I do like, all prepackaged and ready to go for $7.99. Since Yi Mei on Atlantic is still closed from the fire, this is the place to get your Taiwanese breakfast in this part of the SGV. Street address is 423 N. Atlantic Bl., #106, on the north side of the Shun Fat Supermarket.

  1. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully, they can be a solid replacement for all the people in the area who are missing Yi Mei. Now if I could just get someone to take down that ridiculous traffic light they added for Atlantic Times Square or whatever it's called.

I went there today and talked to the owner. They are the old Yi Mei.

    2. Where do they come up with these names?! Huge Tree? I'll ponder that as I dip the crueller in some fresh soy milk there...

I think you mean "curler" (that's what it says on the menu :)

      2. You've done it again Chandavkl, beat me to the punch...yesterday I passed by at about 4PM and noticed the sign for Huge Tree Pastry. Thanks for the report.

        1. This place indeed is the spiritual successor of Yi Mei. The woman who used to work behind the counter at Yi Mei recognized the BF and I as we were peering into the window and waved us in. Huge Tree offers the same things Yi Mei used to, with the addition of the Taiwanese oyster pancake, which I don't seem to remember Yi Mei ever having.

The space itself is a lot bigger, maybe 4x as large as Yi Mei used to be. There are still a few hiccups from a new opening they have to run through (our you tiao was too chewy), but I'm happy that the Yi Mei folks have found a new home.

          1. In case anyone's wondering:

Huge Tree Pastry will appear on Cooking Channel, June 30, 8:00pm. I hope Lillian gets some TV gigs from this. It'd be awesome for her & the community, which desperately needs some English-speaking TV time.

That would explain your cryptic comment last month:

Is it a full show about Huge Tree, or will they just be one feature, like in DDD?

They'll be part of a segment. Believe the show is on SGV's Taiwanese food, which happens to be the hostess' motherland.
