Woo Lae Oak, Rolling Meadows

We are being taken out for dinner by out of towners who know we love Korean restaurants and have never been. However, we don't want to take the drive to the city due to proximity of all..we thought of going to Woo Lae, but see very mixed reports, from horrid to wonderful. And most based on the service. We are looking for tabletop cooking, and also thought of Koreana and Solliphana. I would like to keep the drive back to Lake in the Hills at a minimum as I just got back in town from business travel for te last 4 days ;-)

I personally love Woo Lae Oak. It is a chain from Korea, and it is probably one of the better Korean BBQ's in Chicagoland, both in terms of food and service. Comparing to stables in the city (like Cho Sun Oak and Sam Soo Gab San), Woo Lae Oak's service is way better. The only complaint I can imagine is that the waitresses will try to cook the meat for you table-side. I totally don't mind that; but if you want to diy, just take over the cooking after they cut the meat for you.

The setting is also much more ideal - spacious, smokeless, and easy parking. If you're used to the crowded, smoky joints in the city, Woo Lae Oak will be a refreshing experience.

As non-Chicagoan who's known the Woo Lae Oak franchise since its Beverly Hills "heyday" and most recently in its SoHo NYC form, I think you could do better - if authenticity is something you desire. On my last trip (to the SoHo outpost) I don't think I counted any Koreans on staff. Not sure about the Rolling Meadows location. Now, if you want a clean(er) BBQ experience, and better ease of communication - Woo Lae Oak fits the bill. Otherwise, I'm sure there would be places in Koreatown with much better offerings (can't comment though as I haven't been).

The location in Rolling Meadows employs a 100% Korean staff team.

We went to Woo Lae Oak, and it was delightful. We are definitely used to the whole in the wall places in little Korea, which are usually wonderful. Woo Lae was terrific. The staff is 100% Korean, and very sweet people, at the least the ones we dealt with. Food was great, service was great, and the atmosphere was great. We just couldn't see taking our virgin Korean food eaters to San Soo Gap San, our personal favorite or New Seoul BBQ another favorite. While the food is always great, service?? just never know ;-) Highly recommend Woo Lae for a business dinner!
