Ada's Latin Flavor ~ Long Branch

equal_Mark Sep 14, 2010 11:46 AM

Figured it's time this little gem got it's own thread. It began some months ago on a thread devoted to Diaz Flavor at: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/577372

Stopped at Ada's for lunch today and had one of the best Cubano sandwiches in a couple years. Judging from the roast pork in the Cubano, I'd have to bet that the Pernil is excellent too.

Service was good and I had a nice chat with Ada, the owner. How an Ethiopian American accountant ends up running a Dominican restaurant may be improbable, but I'm glad that's how it worked out.

Looking forward to working my way through the rest of the menu, which be here:

Thanks for the heads up. It's local, and I am going to begin to sample some of the Central & South American eateries on Broadway this fall.

Did takeout from Ada's tonight, and following Tapas' advice opted for the Pork Ribs in Garlic Sauce special served with rice.. Wow! the sauce was amazing. Very well spiced. I have a penchant for hot & spicy food, but this dish was not so much hot as having very pronounces and balanced seasoning. Also got a side of tostones and a couple beef empanadas to have for lunch over the weekend.

Ada was there as was her husband. We chatted while my order was being prepared, and I could have stayed longer but the bag of takeout was smelling so good... :-)

This is a solid addition to the local shore scene, and I will be working my way through the menu (as well as looking forward to the possibility of some Ethiopian fare [hint-hint])

Mark....so glad you tried the Ribs with the Garlic Sauce its interesting and amazingly Delicious....just looking at your pictures is making me hungry for them all over again. Aidas is definitely a hidden gem & we love dining there. Thanx for the review ....I hope more Chowhounders will try it also.

        take care

Thanks for the rec, Mark (and Tapas)! I was down the shore yesterday so I took the slow ride home and stopped in Long Branch for a late lunch at Ada's--and it was delicious! I had a chicken empanada with a terrific mojo criollo (I think)...the empanada was hot and not a bit greasy, the shredded chicken flavorful. Then I went with the basics...pernil and maduros, two of my favorite things! The pork was tender and flavorful, and the maduros perfectly cooked and also without a trace of grease. Leftovers for lunch today! :-)

I met Ada, and have to say that she and her husband (?) were both interested in knowing if I enjoyed the food, how I had heard about it, etc. When I told her, they were both saying how VERY appreciative they are of Mark's spreading the love! I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. Thanks again for the tip!

Hey, I gotta hand it to Tapas for his heads up on this place (plus the specific recommendation of the pork ribs). I posted Ada;s menu on the Diaz thread last Winter, but have to admit not actually eating there till the subject was revisited on that thread. To this I am grateful. I've been looking forward to the Pernil since first going there last week, but had to go for the ribs first as they are not on the regular menu (Like their baked beans too, nice touch of cumin)...

I was there about 5:45 picking up an order of Bacalao with the red paprika sauce, tostones and beans. Of course someone was in my reserved parking spot out front so I had to park around the side and got totally soaked as it was pouring rain. Still was worth it. Ada was still amused that I don't actually know your name... :-)

I go to the gym 3 times a week in LB and generally get takeout afterwards (I've fot a whole separate listing of just my favorite takeout places). Yesterday was a choice between Ming Ying and Ada's (Love their pork shu mai dumplings and spicy sechuan wontons)... Great minds etc...

I was there for lunch today and also had the Cubano (Also got a couple empanadas to go for lunch on the weekend). Was talking to Ada and she mentioned the "Woman from Ft. Monmouth with her friends" who said they were there on my recommendations. I actually thought it might have been you as the only other Ft. Monmouth presence here (that I know of) on Chowhound is a guy. She thought the fact that other folks here only know each other online and have never actually met was rather amusing. :-)

                  taste test RE: equal_Mark Sep 29, 2010 04:47 AM

I'm not the woman from Ft. Monmouth but another who recently tried and loved Adas. She asked where I heard about the restaurant and I also said Chowhound.

My husband and I ordered the beef ribs, pernil, avocado salad and a cubano. We wanted to try several things and took the leftovers home.

This restaurant made me realize how important a nice (if humble) atmosphere and a friendly, efficient host/wait staff is to an enjoyable dining experience. I love mom and pop type places with good food.

taste test.... I agree, doesn't have to be that fancy or "fine dining" per say to have a great meal especially when all the elements combine in harmony like at Ada's.....
Glad you enjoyed it ....I love those ribs! :)

Was there for dinner tonight. They were quite busy with pretty much all of the tables and one of the counter stools occupied. Pork ribs with Garlic Sauce was offered as a special again, but I decided to go for some new selections. Ordered the Yucca Cake appetizer which is sort of akin to a potato pancake. It was crispy on the outside and smooth but firm inside. It is served with salsa and sour cream.

Ordered the Shrimp with Garlic Sauce entree with a side of tostones. The shrimp was well seasoned and tasty with sauteed onions and peppers. Ada and her husband Mulualem turned me on to an order of Maduros, which are a sweeter form of plantains than the tostones. Munched on them when I got home, a nice snack!

As usual, all the food was great and the place is busy and cheerful with several regulars grabbing some dinner (I assume Ada would have clued me in if Tapas were there...) :-)

Had dinner at Ada's last night. We found it thanks to this board. Great, tasty, home style Dominican, Puerto Rican food. Had the tostones, which were out of this world, and then we tried the pernil and the special chiccaron and mofongo....which was the best I ever had!! As said on this board before, Ada is a gracias owner, and is very proud of her restaurant. If you like this type of cuisine, or have never tried it and want to try a real version of it, Adas is the place for you!! Great!!!!

She assured me that she could stuff anything I wanted into an empanada (Have to bring in some Szechuan Pork from Ming Ying and have her make me a Szechuan Pork Empanada). :-)

Also picked up a Pastel en hoja (green Banana wrap with Beef) to take home...

I have to say all the praise for Ada's is definitely worth it. I went with my wife and 6 month old the other night and everything was delicious. DW started with the tripe soup and she loved it. The broth was exceptionally flavorful and the tripe was cooked perfectly and tender. I had a beef empanada appetizer and it was perfectly spiced and as stated above not a hint of grease. We then shared the Mofongo app and that was excellent also. We appreciated the textural play between the crunchy and soft in the dish. The "sauce" that came with it was so flavorful. I have sauce in quotes when we complimented Ada on it she admited she was out of normal Mofongo sauce and had given us her beef broth from her beef stew. Needless to say when we return beef stew will be on the menu. For our main courses I had the beef short ribs in garlic sauce which was on her special board. The meat came right off the bone and was so tender they were amazing. The garlic sauce was also excellent. My DW had the pernill mentioned in posts above and all we could both say was WOW. The flavor of that pork was out of this world. When I got the check I couldn't believe what a value this place is on top of being delicious. We also had the pleasure of meeting Equal Mark and Tapas52 and I am not sure if we thanked them in person for poIsting about this wonderful restaurant then, so in case we didn't I wanted to now.

Tapas it was nice to meet you to. The Korean Restaurant is:

                                6101 Middlesex Mall
                                South Plainfield, NJ 07080
                                (908) 755-0777

It's in the back of a strip mall and the biggest store in the strip mall is a Sears. I don't know how familiar you are with Korean food, but one of her favorite things to get when she is in Korea and also at Kimchihana is doenjang jjigae which is a type of Korean stew. The Korean BBQ particulary the marinated beef short ribs is always good. We also enjoy the beef japchae which I equate to the Korean version of Lo Mein. If you make it there hope you enjoy.

I hadn't been back to Ada's since she first opened and it was still "Diaz"... so after a long wait I went back. I thought the food was pretty good overall, but Diaz used to put out better pernil and rice and red beans imo...actually for me the Diaz red beans and rice was crack, I miss it. :( I also preferred the red tripe soup that diaz used to do over Ada's. I know it's not fair to compare her to a restaurant that doesn't even exist any more, but it's hard not to make the comparison since she opened in the spot that used to be called diaz (althought the food at this location was never close to the ones in Asbury and Avon).

Anyway, I will definitely be back to try their other dishes. :)

BTW, another Mexican joint opened up right next to Ada's that looks promising, they say they used to be by Pleasure Bay but moved. Man I love Long Branch. :)

                                    yes, Papagallos

I stopped by Ada's today but they are closed on Sunday's :(

I've been grabbing take-out at a few of the Brazilian pezaos in LB. It's like a fast home cooked meal.

It's taken me a while to post, but better late than never. We were looking for someplace new to go for our Anniversary. Something low key with good food since we have a bigger celebration planned for later. After reading the posts here we decided to try Ada's with our party of seven. As we waited for our party to arrive we chatted with the others there, and lo and behold, sitting at the very next table was Mark!! Thank you Mark. We had a most enjoyable evening and delicious meal. Ada and staff couldn't have been more gracious, even supplying gold rimmed wine glasses for our byob. The empanadas were so good we ordered extras. We also enjoyed the pastel en hoja and the mofongo. The Shrimp in garlic sauce was excellent, as was the chicken stew and pork chops. The skirt steak was a little tough, but tasty. Rice and beans and plantains rounded out our meal.

All in all, a most enjoyable evening. We'll be back.

Had lunch there yesterday and had the Mufango and beef tripe soup. Both were very good and well seasoned. Definitely will be going back again to try more of their creations. Ada was very gracious and friendly as always. Good eats!

From then on, a tasting of Ethiopian cuisine will be available on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. All the standard Dominican specialties will continue being served.

This review is for Ada's new offering of Ethiopian food which is available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I was born and raised in Ethiopia and lived there for 16 years. She makes really tasty Ethiopian food at an incredible price. Though her place is small with not many seats this is native food for her and she does a great job. Ethiopian cooking takes many hours to prepare but she does not cut corners. Her best dishes are the chicken stew (doro wot), split lentil, shiro and collard greens. She serves it all with excellent Ethiopian crepes called Injera. I have eaten in a lot of Ethiopian restaurants and though she does not have a big variety of food she has captured the essence of Ethiopia.

Last night we ventured back to Adas Latin Flavor Restaurant for dinner. It's been a while since I was in the area and really missed it. I haven't tried the new Ethiopian menu she started on Thurs, Fri & Sat....so after some terrific beef Empanadas I dove righto the new menu and tried the Doro Tibs / Spicy - Pieces of chicken breast Sauteed w. onions, peppers, garlic, ginger & tomato sauce, served with shiro & collard green.. I really enjoyed the new experience eating with my fingers using the Homemade Ethiopian Bread Injera.....this is a great addition to her already fantastic Dominican menu.......I will be back soon to try some more ....!

Finally stopped in at Ada's for some Ethiopian fare...HOLY CRAP IT WAS DELICIOUS!

My only exposure to Ethiopian food was at Makeda in New Brunswick and after one visit I wrote it off - it was like overpriced bland Indian food to me.

Not so at Ada's. Not only are the flavors rockin', the price is right! I shared the combo platter with my friend, and for 18 bucks we ate like kings. That's 18 bucks total!

If you want some kick ass home made spicy food....it doesn't get a whole lot better than this.

One negative: Unfortunately the chicken empanada was very meh.
