Ada's Latin Flavor ~ Long Branch

Figured it's time this little gem got it's own thread. It began some months ago on a thread devoted to Diaz Flavor at:

Stopped at Ada's for lunch today and had one of the best Cubano sandwiches in a couple years. Judging from the roast pork in the Cubano, I'd have to bet that the Pernil is excellent too.

Service was good and I had a nice chat with Ada, the owner. How an Ethiopian American accountant ends up running a Dominican restaurant may be improbable, but I'm glad that's how it worked out.

      I love this place Aida is a gracious hostess who loves cooking great food. We always enjoy eating there casual and delicious.

    2. Did takeout from Ada's tonight, and following Tapas' advice opted for the Pork Ribs in Garlic Sauce special served with rice.. Wow! the sauce was amazing. Very well spiced. I have a penchant for hot & spicy food, but this dish was not so much hot as having very pronounces and balanced seasoning. Also got a side of tostones and a couple beef empanadas to have for lunch over the weekend.

      Ada was there as was her husband. We chatted while my order was being prepared, and I could have stayed longer but the bag of takeout was smelling so good... :-)

      This is a solid addition to the local shore scene, and I will be working my way through the menu (as well as looking forward to the possibility of some Ethiopian fare [hint-hint])

      1. re: equal_Mark glad you tried the Ribs with the Garlic Sauce its interesting and amazingly Delicious....just looking at your pictures is making me hungry for them all over again. Aidas is definitely a hidden gem & we love dining there. Thanx for the review ....I hope more Chowhounders will try it also.

      2. Thanks for the rec, Mark (and Tapas)! I was down the shore yesterday so I took the slow ride home and stopped in Long Branch for a late lunch at Ada's--and it was delicious! I had a chicken empanada with a terrific mojo criollo (I think)...the empanada was hot and not a bit greasy, the shredded chicken flavorful. Then I went with the basics...pernil and maduros, two of my favorite things! The pork was tender and flavorful, and the maduros perfectly cooked and also without a trace of grease. Leftovers for lunch today! :-)

        I met Ada, and have to say that she and her husband (?) were both interested in knowing if I enjoyed the food, how I had heard about it, etc. When I told her, they were both saying how VERY appreciative they are of Mark's spreading the love! I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. Thanks again for the tip!

          Curlz...I'm glad you were able to enjoy this little GEM and have a nice dinner there...I'll be back there tomorrow myself as I have business in the area.....goes to show you it doesn't have to be "Fine Dining" all the time & expensive to be delicious!

            Hey, I gotta hand it to Tapas for his heads up on this place (plus the specific recommendation of the pork ribs). I posted Ada;s menu on the Diaz thread last Winter, but have to admit not actually eating there till the subject was revisited on that thread. To this I am grateful. I've been looking forward to the Pernil since first going there last week, but had to go for the ribs first as they are not on the regular menu (Like their baked beans too, nice touch of cumin)...

              Thanx "Foodies" gotta stick together LOL.....your reviews have led me to many a great meal also, some better then other but all enjoyable. Hope to run into you sometime out there also...

            We had dinner there last night.....Aida told us of your visit Mark and says hello.....
            btw the Mofongo & Chicarrone was delicious!!

          2. Had lunch with friends today and this place is great! two of us had the Cubano sandwich and one had the chicken.The bread was something to write home about, wow! Best Cubano I have ever had...Got lots of goodies to go for the family, emplanadas,pasteles, garlic shrimp, talapia, and pernil. Can't wait for the gang to dig in. =Mark, I mentioned you are a buddy of mine and the main reason we were there.... cannot wait to go back

              Barbarella....Aida's taste is a great place we go at least once a week.....I'm so glad people are discovering this little gem.....Spareribs & Mofongo is delicious also...shes a gracious hostess also.....enjoy

                  Mark we were so dissapoinrted ...I called ahead to order two Cubanos as I was in a hurry and just wanted to pick them up and run......when I talked to her on the phone at 5 pm I guess it was too late as she said all day everyone was ordering the Cubano sanwiches & she ran out of those delicious rolls Argggggg! oh well next time i try earlier!!

                    I was there about 5:45 picking up an order of Bacalao with the red paprika sauce, tostones and beans. Of course someone was in my reserved parking spot out front so I had to park around the side and got totally soaked as it was pouring rain. Still was worth it. Ada was still amused that I don't actually know your name... :-)

                      hahaha....anyway did you enjoy the Bacalao? I know we'll bump into each other there at Ada's sometime for sure....on the way home around 10:30pm we got take out from Ming Ling on Montgomery Ave in LB (west end) the Shrimp dumplings are to die for ;)

                        Haha! That is funny and a coincidence. I go to the gym 3 times a week in LB and generally get takeout afterwards (I've fot a whole separate listing of just my favorite takeout places). Yesterday was a choice between Ming Ying and Ada's (Love their pork shu mai dumplings and spicy sechuan wontons)... Great minds etc...

                I was there for lunch today and also had the Cubano (Also got a couple empanadas to go for lunch on the weekend). Was talking to Ada and she mentioned the "Woman from Ft. Monmouth with her friends" who said they were there on my recommendations. I actually thought it might have been you as the only other Ft. Monmouth presence here (that I know of) on Chowhound is a guy. She thought the fact that other folks here only know each other online and have never actually met was rather amusing. :-)

                  I'm not the woman from Ft. Monmouth but another who recently tried and loved Adas. She asked where I heard about the restaurant and I also said Chowhound.

                  My husband and I ordered the beef ribs, pernil, avocado salad and a cubano. We wanted to try several things and took the leftovers home.

                  This restaurant made me realize how important a nice (if humble) atmosphere and a friendly, efficient host/wait staff is to an enjoyable dining experience. I love mom and pop type places with good food.

                    taste test.... I agree, doesn't have to be that fancy or "fine dining" per say to have a great meal especially when all the elements combine in harmony like at Ada's.....
                    Glad you enjoyed it ....I love those ribs! :)
