Any recommendation for cafe maxx type restaurant

  • 8

I live in ft. Lauderdale and have been a huge lover of cafe maxx and armadillo restaurants. It is my 14 year anniversary and am looking for something different but just as good. Prefer not to drive to Miami. Like to try different things. Any suggestions?

  1. I'd recommend 3 Italians in Fort Lauderdale: Casa d'Angelo; Cafe Vico; Serafina. I'd also highly recommend Johnny V on Las Olas, and Cafe Sharaku. These are all great places....and worthy of your special occasion.

I thought I read that Johnny V had closed in an earlier posting on Chowhound. I was also a fan of Armadillo before they closed and do like Cafe Maxx. I wouldn't put Cafe Sharaku on par with those two restaurants. I am a huge fan of Casa d'Angelo, although I've never been to the one in Ft. Lauderdale and can only attest to the great food and service at their Boca outpost. Sadly, I've yet to find a great go to "special occasion" restaurant in Broward and often find myself traveling either north to Palm Beach County or south to Dade for that special night out.

Johnny V's second restaurant (very casual, name escapes me) closed. I loved Armadillo. My problem with Casa d'Angelo in Broward is that they are terrible about honoring reservations on busy evenings (like Saturdays), don't seem to care and there is no comfortable place to wait for a table. We do very much enjoy Valentino's for excellent Italian food, as well as Sette Bello.

Thanks for the clarification re: Johnny V's, although I did go back and look for the original post and while it did say that his other restaurant had closed, it mentioned that Johnny V's was up for sale. I was sorry to hear that as I thought his food was good and the cheese selection great, but after awhile the menu seemed sort of staid.

    2. I really think Broward has a dearth of great restaurants. Last two time at Maxx felt "over the hill." Had dinner at Vico last week and it was a great disappointment. Sharaku is very good, but, to me, not a special destination place. Johnny V comes close, but isn't on par with the better Miami and Palm Beach county places...Sorry:-(

The only 2 Broward restaurants that regularly make it onto our rotation are 3030 Ocean and Valentino's. One that we used to like but never make it to anymore is Canyon. Their no reservation policy was a factor. Otherwise, we usually head south.

          I second Valentino's.

      2. How about Eduardo de san Angel? Always hear great things about it.
