Who serves the best seafood in the Lauderdale area? Particularly interested in fresh grouper.

How about Rustic Inn, Southport Raw Bar, or Whales Rib? Recommendations/comments?

I've had oysters at Whales Rib and they were awesome.

The Whale in Parkland: good oysters, clams, great lobster bisque (my fav anywhere), great all you can eat crab specials tuesdays, lobster mondays, love their bloody marys, cheeseburger was pretty good too

Southport Raw Bar: a dive, good oysters, wings, fish and chips were good, but don't get the crab cakes. Good beer, it's a dive, don't expect miracles from their food

Is The Whale Raw Bar somehow related to Whale's Rib?

It's not a "seafood" restaurant per se. But Greek Islands Taverna does fantastic octopus and their fish dishes are really good. They are a lot cheaper than places like Sunfish. I think their "grouper" is really delicious.

We had a whole yellowtail snapper there a couple of weeks ago that was very good.

For what it's worth, though I hate to spoil dinner, most scientific sources agree that eating grouper is best avoided; this is one of the fish on the verge of collapse. This is part of the reason that the "phony" grouper exists, and possibly, it's not such a bad thing, though clearly unethical.

Be careful of phony grouper. If you see a "deal" on grouper, chances are very good it's some other fish. Real grouper is on the expensive side.

BTW my reference is NOT to any specific restaurant AT ALL (it may have appeared that way), just Grouper in general in Florida.
