What happened to Grillades Da Silva?
It seems like they just vanished in August.
At first I thought a long vacation was the cause; but there's no sign of return yet (and no explanation on the door). I then worried that perhaps someone thought they were too successful/that they had crossed some invisible line in the grilled-chicken racket.
I now hear (via a comment on urbanspoon) that they're moving to a bigger location. This is great news - as long as they stay in the neighborhood! Any word on where they'll be next?
After the Portuguese chicken place on St-Jacques (Portugalia, then Grillades Portuguaises) closed, Grillades Da Silva on Queen Mary was recommended both on CH and by a Portuguese-Canadian friend as another West-End option.
Tried it last night and was pleasantly surprised, though not blown away. On the plus side, the fries and salad, with its tasty vinaigrette, are miles ahead of the place on St-Jacques, where we never bothered ordering them since they were so awful. The fries came seasoned with some type of steak spice, so if you're not into that, be warned to ask for no spices on the fries.
Da Silva's chicken was juicy, non-greasy and well-charred, but we just don't think we'll be craving it quite as often as the one from the St-Jacques place - there's just something missing in the sauce/baste that doesn't bring the chicken up to the addictive level of the other place… not sure what it is! Unlike St-Jacques, here a bowl of piri piri is served on the side, as well as smeared over the chicken. The pastéis de nata was delicious - creamy and tasty.
They have some other interesting things on the menu which we've yet to try, including sardines with grilled pepper salad and a Portuguese steak sandwich.
The place is bright and casual, though I could have done without the TV and electronic music both playing. The cooks/servers were extremely friendly and pleasant - a nice contrast from the brusque/weird service on St-Jacques. There a couple of tables for four, and a half-dozen tables for two. You order at the counter and then they bring your food. (I can't compare the size to their previous incarnation since I've never been there.)
As with St-Jacques, it's a good idea to call ahead to order your chicken unless you want to wait. It was quite busy while we were there from about 6:30-7:30, with lots of walk-in traffic, mostly for takeout, so it looks like it's in good shape, at least based on a Thursday night.
Will attempt to post some pics of the menu - B&W is eat-in, colour is delivery. Some ideas of prices in case they aren't legible:
Whole chicken for delivery: $15.95
1/4 chicken breast with fries and/or salad: $8.95 (eat-in)
1/2 chicken with fries and/or salad: $10.95 (eat-in)
Chicken sandwich: $6.95 (eat-in)
Sardines (4) and grilled pepper salad: $9.25 (eat-in)
Grillades Da Silva
5334 Queen Mary, between Decarie & Coolbrook (south side)
**They are closed Sundays
Open Mon.-Sat. noon-10 pm, delivery 4-10 pm
It was mentioned in a recent "Portugalia" thread but I figured they deserved to be in their respective thread.
Grillades Da Silva is now located on Queen Mary between Decarie and Coolbrook on the south side. The guy behind the counter confirmed that they are the same Da Silva that was located near the JTM.
