Big Timber, Montana
Picturesque little town east of Livingston well worth a visit.
We had dinner in the dining room at the Grand Hotel on a Wens nite in early September. The place was surprisingly busy, given the relative remoteness of the town, and the atmosphere festive. My husband had local rack of lamb - excellent - and I had pork shank, good though a tad salty. The Grand also has a bar, which serves a simpler menu, though it turns out you can also order anything on the dining room menu there. While the dining room has plenty of old-fashioned charm, we liked the atmosphere in the bar, with its incredible collection of trophy heads, even better.
De Notre Cuisine, a bakery across the street, has ethereal scones, muffins, coffee cakes and the like, along with sandwiches on house made ciabatta, healthy homemade soups, and to-die-for fleur de sel caramels. Several notches above your typical small town bakery.
While there, don't miss the drug store soda fountain.
