Good Hash in Toronto?

I'm looking for a really specific type of hash - bits of corned beef with really crispy, thin potato shreds. No big chunks of potatoes allowed. I'd love to find a place that does hash well. Please help! It can be either in downtown or GTA or thereabouts. I'd drive 45 minutes out to get some good breakfast.

  1. 20 years ago I would have said, "The Mars on College". It was perfect, served with eggs, great dark rye toast, and perfect homefries. But that was then. It's still the same grillman, but not sure about the prep.

Eggpectations in the Eaton Centre have it on the menu, though I've only ever had it at a Montreal location so I don't know how good it is there. The Montreal one was great.

I personally love the Corned Beef Hash at Mars on College. It is vastly better than the same at Mars at Yonge & Eglinton.

That is really good to hear, Sherm_TO, I'm going to have to get down there and have Jimmy fry me up a batch. Thanks for posting.

      2. I once had a to-die-for corned beef hash at Hot House Cafe's Sunday breakfast buffet. I don't think it is a regular feature at the Sunday buffet so proceed with caution. Maybe call ahead and request!

Also, I am one of very few CHers who actually really like Hot House, so take this rec for what you will.... most people around here would likely steer you away from it.

          1. Resurrecting this thread because I'm looking for something similar - but I'm happy to have chunks of potato in mine! Missing the transcendent version I used to get at a diner near Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Anyone had a really fabulous corned beef hash with pieces of corned beef (not the vaguely spam-like ground corned beef!) in Toronto since this was first posted?

I have never tried it but Caplansky's has hash on their all day breakfast menu - but they use their house made smoked meat, not corned beef.

I would recommend this. Also they do salami and cheese eggs, which is a big favourrite of mine.

Lately everywhere else I've ordered it has had a sign from the supplier advertising it and I've not learned my lesson yet.

The last time, I swear, was presented in the shape of a tuna tin. I don't known if it came ouf of the tin and went right onto the griddle or if they tried to be artful about it and simply present it that way, but the taste and texture of being premade was unmistakeable.
