birthday dinner with a bunch of specifics?

I'm fairly new in town and am looking for a restaurant for a birthday dinner on a Thursday at the end of the month. This will just be for two people, but my boyfriend is a vegetarian, and due to serious food allergies I can't eat anything with pork or seafood in it (no fish, no shellfish, no crayfish, etc.). However, I do enjoy other meats, e.g. steak, chicken, duck. I know this rules out a lot of New Orleans specialties, but there must still be places we can go! Here is what I'm looking for:

-A place with some beef or bird options for me, and some things my veggie boyfriend can eat other than a salad or plate of grilled vegetables
-A place that either has or is within a couple of blocks of some delicious pastries for dessert
-Cost should be not too much more than $20 for each main course (less is fine too)
-It should either take reservations or not have a long wait for tables
-We live in Uptown but are happy to drive a few miles to other parts of the city
-Due to other food allergies, I basically can't eat Indian or Thai food, and I would prefer not to go to a pizza or kabob place, as we've been overdosing on those lately. I'm also very allergic to nuts, so please don't recommend places with bowls of peanuts on all the tables.
-Tasty cocktails and/or a good wine and beer menu would be a plus

Thanks in advance for all your help and ideas!

Another budget friendly idea is to keep an eye on the menus at Bacchanal Wine. That can add up to a unique and festive meal. You have to get there on the early side, as they sell out of food.

Thanks for mentioning this -- I hadn't heard of the place and it seems like it would be a lot of fun for an evening. Do you know what time they begin serving dinner? I didn't see that on the website, so I'm not sure what would count as "on the early side"...

I like the Sunday Bacchanal thing as much as the next person, but for a birthday dinner? Uh, I wouldn't. Calling it "very casual" is an understatement!

Yes it is very casual, as you can see by the pictures. A wobbly mashup of patio furniture. It's also budget friendly so you can splurge on wine if you want. Last time I went it was about 8 o'clock and almost too late, as half of that night's dishes were sold out. But what we shared, 2 appetizers and an entree, was quite tasty and left room for dessert. I don't know the usual starting time for dinner. . . . .

Consider making a meal of small plates at Cure. The cocktails are deeeelicious. And it fits your budget.

I think the menu changes frequently, but this will give you an idea. http://curenola.com/cuisine.php

I think Dante's Kitchen is your answer. Go to their website, they post that week's menu. Always 5-6 interesting vegetable dishes, and you can do the chicken under a brick with that killer hash side dish. Give it a whirl!

Not sure this will fit all your criteria as it doesn't take reservations and I'm not sure about nearby pastries, but Mondo (in Lakeview) has a lot of choices (poultry, beef, veggie),even w/your restrictions, and it's very reasonable, w/good cocktails.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, I haven't been to any of the places you all have mentioned yet, and they sound tasty. We definitely like Italian, so that might be the way to go. I feel kind of uncomfortable making a ton of special requests from a place I've never been and don't know what I'd be getting, so I'd rather go somewhere we can order from the menu if possible. I guess I'm still having trouble adjusting to how different the restaurant scene is here than in Los Angeles...

I think lots of places could accommodate you if you called ahead and explained your concerns when you made a reservation. I mean, no restaurant wants to send somebody into allergic shock, and there are enough vegetarians these days that most places will cook veggie dishes. I agree that Green Goddess could be a good option, and I love the food there. Dante's Kitchen [my other favorite] also might be able to arrange something, and it's within your price range. I love their desserts.

I thought about Green Goddess, too. What about Italian? A Mano or Domenica might fit your bill.

Wow, with those restrictions, all I can offer is "Happy Birthday."

                  Perhaps The Green Goddess?

                  Sorry,
