Seafood Market Arlington

I am moving to Arlington from California and looking for good place to buy seafood. I have never liked Whole Foods because IMHO their freshness is never that great. I am pretty picky about quality and like my fish to be absolutely fresh with no odor at all.

Is there a purveyor around Arlington or greater DC area that has absolutely top quality fish/shellfish? Is there one that sells at a farmer's market (I have one locally here that is excellent)? I don't mind paying more for quality.

I managed a seafood market for five years back in the day. I avoid Slavin and Sons like the plague. I also find whole foods lacking. Funny, I was in this (clarendon WF) weekend and they were selling whole flounder on special, but it was actually fluke a totally different fish.

Maybe the best place for seafood in VA is Super H Mart in Fairfax. This is a large, very large, clean Korean mega store. They have an excellent fish counter. It is mostly whole fish, but for no cost they will cut it however you want it.

Wegman's has a better than average fish counter also. There is one in Fairfax, one in Dulles and a couple others.

I hear Blacksalt is very good, but I have not been myself and cannot recommend it yet.

Good luck. FYI, these coincidentally are more than likely listed in price point from cheapest to most expensive as well.

Oh yeah. On the Main Ave seafood market (Captain Whites). I have been there a couple times. It is where I go for blue crabs. The selection is large. One can pick out their crabs and then have them cook them for them. It is great for that. All you have to do is show up to the party and dump out the steamy hot crabs and everyone cheers. ;)

Have you been to Grand Mart in Seven Corners? Or great Wall in Merrifield? I live near Seven Corners and go for the fish, but I'm wondering how it stacks up.... I'd go to H Mart, but too far on a regular basis.

I haven't been to Grand Mart in seven corners in a while. I will check it out. Is this the Great Wall you are talking about:

        Great Wall Supermarket
        2982 Gallows Road
        Falls Church, VA 22042-1018
        (703) 208-3320

I haven't been there either, but am definitely interested now.

Yes, that's it. It is Chinese, so a bit different than H-Mart and Grand Mart. The Grand Mart at Seven Corners is relatively small.

I've been to the Grand Mart in Seven Corners and the Super H Mart in Merrifield many times. They have a comparable variety of seafood, but the one Super H Mart smells much less fishy.

Check out the H-Mart (Korean grocery chain). These folks are serious about their fish.

I've always had good results buying seafood from Slavin and Sons, right off 395 at S. Glebe Road in south Arlington.

i don't know of any seafood at farmer's markets in arlington.

america seafood behind arrowine is pretty good. http://www.americaseafood.net/ check it out.

you have problems with whole foods' seafood freshness? and you've tried the clarendon store? if so, you may be out of luck in this area.

i haven't been to the dc waterfront lately, but i'm sure others will give you their opinions. my experience there has been good.

d.c. just isn't a great seafood locale. i'm from florida and miss great seafood.

I have just been to the Whole Foods in California. Have not yet tried Clarendon, will try when I move there.

I'm not familiar with the seafood vendors in Arlington, but one of the very best seafood markets in the area is Black Salt on Macarthur Blvd in DC -- it is quite accessible to Arlington.
