suggestions for best chocolate cake
I'd go with Edgar's Cafe, I also think that Cafe Lalo is overpriced and past its prime.

Definite second on Edgar's. Small and often crowded, but nearly always lively. Desserts are interesting and virtually always fresh. (This is the 84th Street original; haven't been to the new outpost on Amsterdam.)
I'm partial to Good Enough to Eat. But be sure to ask if it's fresh. There's a pastry case, so you can tell what's best by looking.

Soutine has a great chocolate cake made of chocolate meringue and chocolate mousse.
Cafe Lalo has atmosphere and an assortment of chocolate desserts. Call ahead to find out which of the chocolate cakes are available.

I'll disagree with the Cafe Lalo suggestion. $7.50 for a slice of mediocre chocolate cake.
